Big Bog State Recreation Area to host July events

Jun. 24—WASKISH — Here's a look at the upcoming events that will be held in July at Big Bog State Recreation Area.

10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6: Outdoor Kids: Hooked on Adventure. Designed especially for budding anglers, this program encourages children to cast their lines and reel in excitement as they discover the wonders of fishing. Kids will dive into the basics of fishing, from casting techniques to bait selection, all while discovering the wonders of aquatic ecosystems. Children ages six and older are welcome to join. All equipment and bait will be provided. Dress for the weather and meet across from the Visitor Center.

1 to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, July 6: Lovely Lady's Slippers. From Minnesota's state flower, the Showy lady's slipper, to its sibling varieties, participants will learn all about the lady's slipper orchid. Join a naturalist for a presentation and then a search for these beautiful flowers. Meet at the Visitor Center at the southern unit for the presentation and then take a 10-minute drive to the northern unit to see some of these special orchids.

10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 13: Boglands Uncovered: Exploring Nature's Mysterious Wetlands. This expedition offers an opportunity to venture into the heart of a pristine bog ecosystem. Throughout the tour, the naturalist will illuminate the hidden mysteries of the bog, sharing fascinating insights into the unique flora and fauna that call this ecosystem home. The boardwalk is wide and flat and is one mile long, so expect to walk a total of two miles. There is no shade, so be prepared for warm temperatures if it is sunny. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Meet by the picnic shelter at the northern unit.

10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 27: Birth of the Bog. Not only are the Red Lake Peatlands of Big Bog a unique ecosystem and habitat, they also have a unique ecological and natural history. Come down to the Visitor Center at the southern unit to learn all about the formation and history of this incredible natural resource, play some peatland trivia and become an expert in peat.

1 to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 27: Beaver Buddies. Dive into the fascinating world of beavers and discover the vital role they play in shaping our ecosystems at this fun nature cart. Through an interactive activity and hands-on exploration, young nature enthusiasts will learn all about the incredible abilities and behaviors of these important creatures. Stop by any time between 1 and 2 p.m. Meet in the campground by the shower building. If it rains, the group will meet in the Visitor Center.
