'Big Little Lies' Season 2 Didn't Get a Single Emmy Nomination in 2019
As Hollywood prepares for one of television's biggest nights, fans of Big Little Lies are likely wondering why the HBO show isn't up for any Emmys in 2019. While it might feel like a major oversight, there's actually a very simple reason why the second season of the hit show isn't up for any awards just yet.
The second season of Big Little Lies premiered on June 9, 2019. Meanwhile, the 2019 Emmy nominations were announced just over a month later, on July 16.
As a prestigious awards ceremony, the Emmys has a very specific eligibility period, which ran from June 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019. As such, Big Little Lies Season 2 wasn't eligible to receive any nominations in 2019, as the series hadn't even aired yet. (You can check out the full Emmys calendar over on their website). Instead, the second season, which featured an epic performance by Meryl Streep, will be considered in 2020 instead, so all is not lost.
The third season of Netflix's Stranger Things is in a similar boat, having been released on July 4, also missing this year's eligibility period. Instead, Stranger Things and Big Little Lies will be competing against one another in 2020.
Variety also noted that HBO might have scheduled the premiere of Big Little Lies tactically, so that it wouldn't be competing against the final season of Game of Thrones, which received a record-breaking 32 Emmy nominations in 2019.
