Billie Eilish talks about her evolving sense of style: 'Sometimes I feel sexiest when I feel more masculine'
Billie Eilish is reflecting on her "evolution" when it comes to body image and fashion, sharing her motivation behind trying a variety of looks throughout the years.
"It was all about being extreme for a long time and masculine and big. Then I went 100 percent the other way and I wanted to be feminine," she told The Cut. "Then there was a period of time where I really had no idea what the f*** I was doing."
While Eilish is well known for the baggy clothing that she often wears for performances and events, the 20-year-old nearly broke the internet when she debuted a more girly, stripped down style for British Vogue in 2019. Wearing different pieces of lingerie, she talked about her take on body positivity and how the public had been responding to her body, as well as the way that she opted to dress. She's since experimented with a variety of looks for big red carpets, and now seamlessly flows between her roomier and more fitted looks.
"I feel pretty sexy onstage at certain points, but in general, when I’m dressed in a way that I feel confident in. Sometimes I feel sexiest when I feel more masculine, in a weird way, but then if I smell more feminine. It’s a mix that I crave," she said. "I go through phases of thinking I’m the hottest bitch on earth, and I go through phases thinking I shouldn’t exist."
The Happier Than Ever singer has spoken about the connection between her relationship with her body and her mental health, admitting in the past that it's been in a "truly horrible, terrible" place. As of late, however, Eilish has worked to change that.
"I was having a full yearlong existential crisis. I changed things in my life around, some people left my life, and in the last half-year, the change in who I am has been so drastic. It’s kind of crazy how fast that can happen," she told The Cut.
In a recent interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, she shared that a big part of that evolution has had to do with taking better care of her body.
"I’ve been completely changing the way that my life is involving fitness. I’m a gym rat now," she said, highlighting the injuries that she had sustained on her previous tour as motivation for the change. "I started working out at a gym for the first time and every day. …That was not a thing I did and it’s become such an incredibly huge part of my life and it makes me feel so much better as a person. And the way that I can move onstage now, I feel, like, so much better."
Bodies and body language have even played a big role in her latest fragrance, called Eilish No. 2 — specifically when it came to designing the bottle.
"When I really love a person, and I’m looking at their chest and their collarbone, and I can see their breathing, and I can see their chest going in and out — it literally makes me ache. I just love it so much," she told The Cut. "There’s something so intimate and almost sensual about chests, collarbones. I really wanted this bottle to feel relatable and to feel like it could be anybody. It’s not me, and it’s not you, necessarily. It’s both of us, and it’s everybody."
