'Black-ish' star Jenifer Lewis supports Colin Kaepernick by wearing Nike outfit to the Emmys
Jenifer Lewis showed her support for Colin Kaepernick on the Emmys red carpet on Monday. The Black-ish star wore a custom red and black Nike sweatshirt with the brand’s signature logo bedazzled in the center. Lewis, 61, paired the top with black leggings and Nike shoes.
“I am wearing Nike to applaud them for supporting Colin Kaepernick and his protest against racial injustice and police brutality,” the actress told Variety.
Lewis added that she had kept asking herself, “What can I do? What can I do that’s meaningful? I’ll wear Nike. I’ll wear Nike to say thank you. Thank you for leading the resistance! We need more corporate America to stand up also.”
Nike made waves earlier this month by introducing Kaepernick as the face of its 30th “Just Do it” campaign. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is featured in commercials and advertisements along with the slogan “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.” Lewis showed her support on Twitter after Nike’s announcement.

Despite some calling for a Nike boycott after the divisive campaign was revealed, the company’s stock price closed at an all-time high last week.
Black-ish is known for tackling timely and sensitive topics; however, an episode centered around football players kneeling during the national anthem was scrapped last year due to “creative differences.” ABC maintained it wasn’t shelved over the controversial storyline.
The show is nominated for four Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series and acting nominations for Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Wanda Sykes.
