Black-owned Macon shop uses the science of candle making to promote education. Here’s how

The owner of a Macon candle shop says her business has a significant attribute setting it apart from others: It’s the first Black-owned and woman-owned candle making studio in Middle Georgia.

Pretty Lux Co., opened in July 2023, holds the distinction of being the first Black-owned and woman-owned candle-making studio in the region, which sets a precedent for entrepreneurship and innovation, according to owner Anikitia Abram.

“Pretty Lux Co. is not just a business; it’s a movement toward greater wellness and understanding, providing a nurturing environment that supports both personal and communal growth,” Abram said. “This foundational inspiration continues to drive every aspect of Pretty Lux Co., guiding our mission to enrich lives through both our products and our educational initiatives.”

Abram said the genesis of Pretty Lux Co. was sparked by a personal journey of seeking solace and understanding during moments of anxiety. This search led to the discovery of how soothing candle-making can be. It’s a process that not only calmed her mind but also ignited a curiosity about the science behind it.

Motivated by the experience, the inspiration to establish Pretty Lux Co. stemmed from a desire to share the blend of artistic tranquility and scientific inquiry with others - creating products and experiences that nourish both the soul and the skin, said Abram.

Recognizing the transforming impact that an understanding of STEM could have, Abram said Pretty Lux Co. was founded with a dual purpose - to produce luxurious, soothing products and to foster educational growth, like in science, technology, engineering and math topics.

“By integrating STEM into the art of candle and skincare production, we aim to empower our community. This integration not only enhances the quality and effectiveness of our products but also demystifies complex scientific concepts, making them accessible and engaging,” she said. “The result is a unique space where creativity meets education, where customers can find products that enhance their well-being while gaining insights into the science that makes them effective.”

Abram said to that end, the company offers The CandleSTEM Collective, an initiative that combines the art of candle and skincare making with STEM education. Through workshops and seminars, participants of all ages learn about the science behind the products they use every day.

Abram said the programs are designed to be accessible and engaging, helping demystify STEM subjects and encourage a passion for science and technology. She said The CandleSTEM Collective is not merely an add-on but a vital part of the company operation that intertwines scientific education with the art of candle and skincare production.

Abram said the program provides participants with a unique educational experience by applying STEM principles in a creative and tangible way.

Pretty Lux Co. also collaborates with local schools and community centers, offering workshops and sponsoring events that promote STEM education and entrepreneurship.

Abram said the commitment extends to an exciting partnership with Spelman College, a private all-female college, where Pretty Lux Co. has the opportunity to provide instruction for the Black Beauty STEMinist Symposia and Lab Intensive.

“Through these initiatives, we aim to empower and inspire the next generation of Black women in STEM, emphasizing the importance of diversity in scientific and entrepreneurial fields,” she said. “These efforts are a testament to our dedication to serving and uplifting the community by providing valuable educational experiences and support.”

Abram said such empowerment is especially impactful because it reaches diverse groups, including young girls and underrepresented communities, inspiring them to explore new areas of knowledge and potential career paths.

She added that the role allows the business to also impact young Black women directly, empowering them with knowledge and confidence in STEM fields traditionally underrepresented by their community.

Abram said the business benefits the community in other ways too. She said each product Pretty Lux Co. offers is locally made, emphasizing eco-friendliness and sustainability, which not only supports the local economy but also promotes environmental responsibility.

She said by choosing locally-sourced materials and adhering to environmentally conscious production methods, the business ensures that its impact on the planet is as positive as its impact on its customers.

Pretty Lux Co. offers a multifaceted value proposition that is rare in the business landscape of Macon and beyond, according to Abram. She said the goal is to continue expanding the programs, reaching more young minds and fostering a new generation of innovators who are as passionate about science as they are about creativity.

“In essence, Pretty Lux Co. and The CandleSTEM Collective represent a symbiotic relationship between commerce and community, art and science, individual well-being, and collective advancement,” Abram said. “We’re excited to keep pushing the boundaries of what a business can achieve socially and educationally.”
