Blake Shelton Tweets About Garth Brooks Withdrawing From CMA Award Consideration
On Wednesday, Garth Brooks announced that he’s taking himself out of the running for the Country Music Association Awards’s top prize.
Fellow country star Blake Shelton took to Twitter to voice his opinion, calling him the "entertainer of the century."
The CMA rules state that artists can’t prevent themselves from being nominated.
Blake Shelton is weighing in on Garth Brooks's big announcement.
On Wednesday, July 29, Garth declared that he will no longer be competing for Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards moving forward. During a virtual press conference, the “What She’s Doing Now” singer referenced a tweet he read last year that stuck with him after his seventh overall win in 2019.
“It said, 'Why doesn’t he step down and have entertainer of the year be for the next generation?' I 100% agreed,” he said, according to Billboard. “So, with all the love in the world and all the gratefulness, because the last thing I want to do is seem ungrateful to the CMAs and everyone who’s voted for us, we’re officially pulling ourselves out of entertainer of the year."
In reaction to the news, Blake embedded a tweet from musician Steve Wariner, who declared that "there is no one as big as Garth, but more importantly there is no one as kind," while also calling him a "legend."
“Agreed Steve.... He is Garth Brooks. GARTH BROOKS!!!” Blake wrote in response to Steve's tweet. “I don’t give a s--t what anyone says. ANYONE. Entertainer of the century.”

Fans immediately began sharing their thoughts about Garth’s decision and Blake’s opinion.
“Love your comment about @garthbrooks. I wholeheartedly agree about his energy on stage,” one person wrote. “The fact that he is still going strong all this time later shows what a great entertainer he is,” another added. “There will NEVER be a ENTERTAINER like GARTH. HE and his band gives ALL to the fans at EVERY SINGLE CONCERT,” a different fan said.
Not long after, Garth's wife, Trisha Yearwood, tweeted at Blake and Steve and thanked them for their kind words: "I love you boys!! @blakeshelton @stevewariner Thanks for always having my cowboy’s back!"

Despite Garth's well-intentioned remark, it looks like Garth can’t actually withdraw himself from being nominated for Entertainer of the Year. “The long-standing CMA Awards rules do not allow individuals to remove themselves from the balloting process at any point,” the CMA said in a statement. In other words, it comes down to voters to nominating a new winner every year.
Whatever happens next, it's clear that the country music community has great respect for Garth.
