New ‘BMIKE’ mural painted downtown just in time for Super Bowl in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Popular local artist Brandan “BMIKE” Odums now has a new mural on Girod Street near the Superdome.
This new mural is all part of the city’s plan to beautify downtown New Orleans just in time for the upcoming Super Bowl.
Odums, along with teens from his “Eternal Seeds” art program, are putting the finishing touches on this new mural.
“Six weeks art intensive for teen artists in New Orleans. These teens completed this mural in about one week. Young artists are creating beauty,” Odums said.
Renovations inside the Superdome continue
This mural also serves as an art history lesson.
“So, this is a mural of John T. Scott and Sr. Gertrude Morgan. They are both amazing Black artists from New Orleans, who are no longer living, but who’s shoulders we stand on,” Odums said.
The teens with Eternal Seeds learned all about John T. Scott and Sr. Gertrude Morgan to get inspiration as to what to paint on the mural.
For these teens, this mural is a dream come to life.
“I would say this is exactly how we envisioned it,” Marleigh Laraque, an Eternal Seeds artist said.
“The boldness represents a lot about our city because we’re so bold and colorful. We did that,” Nalani Easiley, an Eternal Seeds artist said.
“This is my first time ever doing something public, so I’m really excited for my friends and family to see it,” Milton Issac, an Eternal Seeds artist said.

“We need more engagement with the youth. We need more youth projects,” Andre Pellebon, an Eternal Seeds instructor said.
“Art in public spaces does amazing things to amplify voices and puts up a flag of beauty. Puts up ideas of how we should share spaces,” Odums said.
For Odums, each one of his murals is like a seed.
“For me, it’s about pouring back in the soil so that more flowers can grow,” he said.
Odums’ STUDIOBE is located at 2941 Royal St.
