17-year-old with rare bone cancer proposes to girlfriend: ‘I would only regret not marrying Mollie’
A Pennsylvania high schooler battling Ewing sarcoma proposed to his girlfriend over the weekend after deciding that he wants to spend the time he has left with the love of his life.
Brady Hunker, 17, was first diagnosed with the form of bone cancer in 2016. But after months of treatment and a year in remission, he found out that the cancer had spread and was faced with a discouraging prognosis. Now, Hunker says that while he doesn’t know what his future holds, his perspective on life and love has certainly changed, which led him to get down on one knee over Easter weekend to propose to Mollie Landman.
According to the GoFundMe page that Hunker created to raise money to give Landman the wedding of her dreams, the topic of marriage came up during one of the couple’s deep conversations, where they discussed what their biggest regret would be if they “heard the worst news.”
“The only thing that we could come up with is getting married. In a world full of possibilities and opportunity, if I lost my fight, I would only regret not marrying Mollie,” Hunker wrote. “We don't know when that day will come, or if it ever will, but what we do know is that we don't have a reason to wait.”
The couple has been close friends since they met in school in 2014. But it wasn’t until Hunker’s diagnosis that he learned that he couldn’t live without Landman by his side. He told Pittsburgh, Pa., news station WPXI that he “can’t pinpoint” the exact moment that he made that realization. Still, he writes that it all goes back to how Landman stood by his side during chemo, providing him with the strength, love and even the barf bags that he needed.
“Mollie selflessly helped me on my most difficult days, and was always there to make me smile,” the GoFundMe page reads. “I honestly cannot imagine going through this battle without her, and I couldn't be more thankful for such an incredible girl coming into my life and staying to help me through the toughest battle I could imagine.”
Landman told the news station that her bond with Bunker certainly comes from the life-changing and life-threatening circumstances that they’ve faced together.
“We just share that kind of bond that I don’t think you can have without going through something awful with each other,” she said. “So I think just going through all of this has really changed our perspective on life and made us appreciate every single moment that we have together.”
In an effort to not waste anymore time, the pair plan to wed this summer. And although Hunker has asked for people to donate to the couple’s GoFundMe so that he can “make the day a dream come true,” his fiancée told WPXI that her wish for her wedding day goes beyond what money can buy.
“My dream wedding is not just like oh I want the flowers to be pretty and I want to wear the perfect dress,” she said. “But I want it to inspire people to just love differently and to live their lives differently.”
