Boy George on His Fake Hair, Culture Club Costumes & Flamboyant Style
Boy George isn’t one to shy away from dramatic makeup and extravagant outfits. So when the Culture Club singer sat down with Yahoo Style’s Joe Zee for an episode of Timeless, Time Warp or Time To Hide, there were plenty of epic looks to pore over.
George opens up about his Celine Dion moment—“That’s who I was trying to be!”—and spills the origin story behind his tie dye jeans, platform boots, and DIY jacket in another memorable look.
The 54-year-old’s gender bending outfits, typical of the “Blitz kid” movement, aren’t the only things catching people by surprise: George’s beauty looks—namely his hair and makeup—have stopped some in their tracks, “I had kind of this funny hair and I had these pieces that I stuck in. I’d stick bits in so it was like a crown of thorns,” George says of a hairstyle he rocked in the ‘80s. “I remember Dionne Warwick being quite scared when she saw me.”
Even British royals, like Princess Margaret, were overheard talking about his outrageous maquillage and sartorial choices. “The queen’s late sister, princess Margaret, walked by and she was overhead saying, ‘Who’s that over made-up tart?’’ he explains when peering at a picture of himself taken in London in 1985. (George was wearing a sequin top and red jacket with white face makeup and scarlet eye shadow.) He continues: “No one knew whether she was saying that about me or someone else but the press said, ‘No, she said it about you.’”
And when asked what his loyal followers can expect of the upcoming Culture Club summer tour (kicking off on July 17 in Vancouver, Canada) costumes, the music man says they’re replete of “drama, turbans, self-referencing…and drama.” Not much has changed from Boy George’s Culture Club heydays beginning in the early ‘80s.
