'Boy Meets World' Cast Says Ben Savage ‘Ghosted’ Them
Several members of the Boy Meets World cast are still incredibly close, but, apparently, Ben Savage, who played Cory Matthews, is no longer one of them.
There's Will Friedle (Eric Matthews), Danielle Fishel (Topanga Lawrence), and Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), of course, who host the popular podcast Pod Meets World together. Then there's Bill & Bonnie Daniels (Mr. & Mrs. Feeny), who just happened to call to check in on Friedle while the aforementioned trio was at lunch with Emily Longeretta. They even still get their hair done by the show's stylist.
But somewhere along the line, Savage stepped back from the friendship. While he joined cast reunions at fan conventions over the years, he declined the invitation to be a part of their podcast.
“He was very adamant that it was not for him,” Fishel told Longeretta. “He was also very clear, ‘I don’t want it to stop you. If you guys want to do it, go ahead.’ The time between those conversations and the time we actually started the podcast was a significant amount of time.”
Then, he stopped showing up at conventions, "just kind of disappear[ing] from [their] lives," which came as a shock given how tight they all were.
He even came to be with Fishel when her first son was in the NICU, but suddenly, he "ghosted" them. It's been three years since anyone has heard from him.
“He disappeared," Friedle confirmed. "I wish I knew why, to this day.” There was no "fight" or "falling out" or "animosity." Friedle described it as, "He just woke up one day, and decided I don’t want this person in my life anymore."
Eventually, Friedle texted him, emphasizing their decades-long history. “I said, ‘I’m gonna call you every day until you tell me not to call you anymore.’ That lasted about three weeks or a month, every single day.”
Savage never picked up the phone. “I tried and tried and tried for months, until finally my wife was like, ‘Why are you doing this to yourself? He obviously doesn’t want you in his life.'”
Fishel is still holding out hope for now, pointing to the podcast as a lesson that "everyone is on their own journey and having their own experiences that can be perceived many different ways, depending on your POV." Despite being estranged now, she added, "I will always love Ben and want what’s best for him. I don’t think this is the end of our story — but time will tell.”
