Brad Pitt, 58, on his distaste for the term 'anti-aging': 'It's ridiculous. It's a fairy tale.'
Brad Pitt has a thing or two to say about aging.
In a new interview with Vogue, the 58-year-old shares his thoughts about getting older and what inspired him to create his new genderless skincare line, Le Domaine.
"I don’t want to be running from aging," the actor said. "It’s a concept we can’t escape, and I would like to see our culture embracing it a bit more, talking about it in those terms."
That concept inspired the mission behind the line, which, he notes, includes dismantling the false notion of the term "anti-aging."
"Something we discussed [in founding Le Domaine] was this headline of 'anti-aging,'" he said. "It’s ridiculous. It’s a fairy tale. But what is real is treating your skin in a healthy manner. And it’s something I’ve learned to do for my business."
Changing the idea of skincare to be a form of self-love, instead of something superficial, he adds, is just as important. Though, admittedly, he chooses to keep his own skin routine simple.
"I grew up with a country mentality, kind of you know, Dial soap once a day and then move on," he shared. "And I think that we’re learning that if we love ourselves, if we treat ourselves a little better, then there are long-lasting benefits to that. So just age healthy, age in a healthy manner."
Looking ahead, the actor said he's choosing to prioritize the people in his life.
"The older I get, the more I think about quality of life, and time expenditure, and I sure would like to point it more in this direction," he admitted. "I think after lockdown it seemed to be on a lot of people’s minds — like, how are we spending our time, why are we grinding so much, what are we dedicating our lives to? And I think that family and friends at the end of the day is all that matters.
Outside of skincare, Pitt made other major changes to his lifestyle recently — including giving up smoking and drinking altogether.
While chewing a nicotine mint, the star explained to GQ in June that he quit smoking cigarettes during the pandemic after realizing he didn't have it in him to simply "cut back."
“I don’t have that ability to do just one or two a day,” he explained. “It’s not in my makeup. I’m all in. And I’m going to drive into the ground. I’ve lost my privileges.”
After his ex, Angelina Jolie, filed for divorce in 2016, Pitt said he got sober and spent a year and a half attending Alcoholics Anonymous — though he had to make adjustments for the sake of maintaining his privacy.
“I had a really cool men’s group here that was really private and selective, so it was safe,” he said. “Because I’d seen things of other people who had been recorded while they were spilling their guts, and that’s just atrocious to me.”
