That frown your dog makes when you put him behind a gate can be absolutely gut-wrenching. No one ever wants to leave man's best friend in jail, but sometimes it's a necessary evil—for the dog and the decor. One of the pitfalls of doggy gates at home is that they can be an eyesore on an otherwise carefully-crafted room. But as one of our favorite designers Summer Thornton shows, with the right materials, they don't have to be so bad looking.

For a recent custom design project, Thornton traded common doggy gate materials like plastic or wood for polished brass, which she integrated into the home's millwork. In the process, she teaches us that there's really no limit to what a designer can do to elevate any part of the home.

“If I’m going to be behind bars, at least they’re polished brass!” Thornton captioned a photo of a handsome retriever, whose golden coat perfectly accentuates the gate.

The upgraded solution was a hit on Instagram, where one fan dubbed it "the Gilded Gate." As if Thornton's innovative design wasn't enough to sell us on brass doggy gates, this pup sure does the trick.

One place where we wouldn't mind being locked up is the top-secret hotel project Thornton's working on, which she has described as "bananas." We've been waiting for the big reveal ever since she shared her mood board with a photo of a young Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by a palette of golds and yellows earlier this year.

Unfortunately for now, the details remain under lock and key. But if that brass doggy gate is any indication, we have a hunch that it's a design suited for royalty.
