Ariana Grande's new album Sweetener was released last night, along with her interlude "Pete Davidson," originally titled "Pete," her tribute to her fiancé Pete Davidson. She wrote the song after they connected in late May and after he essentially proposed to her on the day they met. "[I wrote it] like a week after we started hanging out and stuff," she said. "I just made it and I sent it to him and I didn’t know what to call it so I just called it ‘Pete’. It was either going to be that or like, ‘This Is About Pete Davidson’ I was like, why not? You know? Be direct."

It's short, but there's a lot of sweet sentiment packed into it lyrically. Here, a breakdown of Grande's lyrics, via Genius, and their backstory:

Intro:

Mmm, yeah, yuh

Verse:

I thought you into my life, woah

Look at my mind, yeah

Grande captioned her first Instagram with Davidson with the lyric on May 31 (likely when she was writing the song).

No better place or a time

Look how they align

Universe must have my back

Fell from the sky into my lap

And I know you know that you're my soulmate and all that

On The Tonight Show, Grande talked about predicting she'd marry Davidson years before they actually started hanging out. "We met on SNL and like two, three years ago whenever that was, we never exchanged numbers or anything," she said. "I had the biggest crush on the world on him, like forever. My friends used to make fun of me for all that stuff. No, of course [I never said anything to him]. I figured whatever… I like left his writer’s room, and we were writing skits and stuff for the show and my tour manager Scoot was in the hallway. And I’m not a crushy person, I don’t have crushes on people I don’t know. I left and I like, jokingly said to my tour manager, I’m marrying him 100 percent…we weren’t even friends. I didn’t even see him at the after party."

I’m like ooh, ooh

My whole life got me ready for you, ooh, ooh

Got me happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy, yeah

I'ma be happy, happy

Since going public with Davidson, Grande has used her Instagram captions and photos to publicly declare how happy Davidson has made her:

Won’t get no crying from me, yeah

Grande could be touching here on how she felt in previous relationships. She talked candidly on Twitter about her last ultimately "toxic" relationship with Mac Miller and how hard and scary it had been for her emotionally as she tried to support him and encourage him to maintain his sobriety:

Gonna be happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy, yeah

Gonna be happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy, yeah

Gonna be happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy

I'ma be happy, happy
