Breaking News: 5X Surfing World Champ Carissa Moore to Leave Competitive Surfing

Big news from Carissa Moore.

Hawaii's five-time surfing world champ announced today in a New York Times article that she'll soon step away from competitive surfing.

"Carissa Moore will leave competitive surfing after going for a repeat Olympic gold medal this summer and wants to start a family, a plan that has been in the works for over a year," according to a story by NBC Sports.

Moore posted the montage above this morning and captioned it:

"Surfing is a part of who I am, and it always will be. This is by no means the end. I’d like to think of this instead as an evolution, the start of the next chapter, a new beginning. —Riss"

Citing the Times article, NBC reported:

“Moore’s agent confirmed Friday that she will have an abbreviated competition schedule this season, starting with the first World Surf League contest at Banzai Pipeline in her native Hawaii in late January and early February.

"Moore will then be part of the Olympic surfing competition, which will be held in Tahiti, which also hosts a WSL contest in May.

"The other is the Paris Olympics, where surfing will be held in Tahiti, at Teahupo’o, in July.

"Moore is leaving the door open to returning to competitive surfing as a mom in future years and possibly bidding for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“I don’t like the word retirement,” she said, according to the Times. “I like to say a departure from the tour, or just stepping back, or switching gears, or, like, evolving.”

The news follows Moore's world title loss last year to Floridian Caroline Marks in the best-of-three, winner-take-all final matchup at San Clemente’s Lower Trestles.

This is a developing story. More to come.
