Bride's wedding dress saved before home tragically burned down in California's Camp Fire
Joey Best and Megan Janko are among the thousands of California residents who lost their homes to the wildfires blazing through parts of California, but one important possession was saved — Megan’s wedding dress.
Not only did the couple lose all their other possessions, but their wedding venue also burned down, as well as other relatives’ homes and the family’s daycare center, CBS Sacramento reports.
“As long as I have you guys up there with me to be my groomsmen, I’m fine,” Best said to the couple’s two sons.
Best’s sister saved Megan’s wedding dress when she went back to get food for her 8-month-old. “The dress was the first thing I grabbed,” she told CBS News. She said Megan worried that it would sound insensitive to ask her soon-to-be sister-in-law to grab her gown, but she quickly told Megan, “It’s already on my list.”
At least 63 Californians have died in the Camp Fire as of Friday morning, with the authorities counting more than 600 people missing. Butte County Housing Authority executive director Ed Mayer told CNN that those who lost their homes will have a hard time finding a place to live because 10 percent of the county’s housing is suddenly gone.
Best’s aunt started a fundraiser for the couple on Facebook, and the community has already raised nearly $4,000 to help them get back on their feet.
“They were looking forward to special wedding day on November 24th,” the fundraising page reads. “Please help support and give them Hope, Love, Encouragement and donations to rebuild a new home and future together.”
While their wedding venue has burned down, they still have their reception set for Nov. 24, according to Sacramento news station KXTL.
Best and Janko both wrote to thank everyone for the support and shared that they’re looking for a house to rent.
“Thank you so much to everything!” Janko said. “We never expected such an outpouring of love. Each and every one of you and this community of Roseville, we are truly blessed.”
