If you love OREO cookies, you're in good company. The maker of this iconic treat produces more than 40 billion (yes, billion) cookies a year. Available in more than 100 countries, it’s safe to say the OREO is a global phenomenon. It’s also among the oldest and most well-known cookie brands, with a legacy dating back more than a century—the first OREO cookie was produced in New York City in 1912.
The Many Flavors of OREO Cookies
Of course, a lot has changed over the past century. Although the original chocolate wafer and vanilla crème may still reign supreme in the OREO universe, dozens of other flavors have been added to the mix (although some only stuck around for a short time). Today, there are more than two dozen different types that are available year-round, with several other seasonal cookies that make repeat appearances every year.
Many supermarkets only stock a few OREO flavors, though, so you may need to look around to find some of the more unusual ones—or order them online.
Editors' Note: To spotlight flavors you can actually buy right now, we focused our rankings (with one exception) on OREO flavors currently available in the U.S.

OREO Flavors, Ranked
13. Toffee Crunch OREO
Made with chocolate wafers and crunchy toffee-flavored crème, these cookies have a flavor—and texture—that will appeal to a specific subset of cookie lovers. One online commenter said they “missed the mark,” and many noted that the crème doesn’t actually seem to taste like toffee.
12. Birthday Cake OREO
You would think anything involving birthday cake would be a surefire hit, but it seems that’s not necessarily true. Instagrammer @junkfoodmom celebrated spotting these in stores, but many online reviewers used words like “chemical” and “artificial” to describe the taste.

11. Chocolate Hazelnut OREO
This variety puts chocolate hazelnut crème inside the chocolate cookies, but Instagrammer @madabseats said they had to resort to augmenting the cookies with Nutella because the cookies had so little hazelnut flavor. Other commenters also found them lacking in the flavor department.

10. Dark Chocolate OREO
TikToker @gracelikerainblog said they had been waiting a long time to try these dark chocolate OREOs, and gave them an 8 out of 10. If you like dark chocolate, you’re more likely to give these a thumbs up, but some online reviewers noted that the dark chocolate crème filling in this variety had an odd taste to it.

9. Chocolate Crème OREO
Reviews on this flavor are a mixed bag. Some found them a nice change of pace from the classic vanilla crème, while others felt they missed the mark. Considering that, it seems appropriate to place them near the middle of the pack.
8. Java Chip OREO
This variety features coffee-flavored crème dotted with chocolate chips. Obviously, this flavor is more likely to appeal to coffee lovers, but thankfully that’s a pretty large group. This variety gets tons of positive reviews, with one reviewer saying, “It was hard not to eat the whole package immediately.”
7. Golden OREO
For those who feel like the original OREO is too chocolatey (if there is such a thing) or simply prefer vanilla to chocolate, this all-vanilla option is well, golden. They pair great with milk, too.
6. Caramel Coconut OREO
We understand if you are skeptical about this flavor combination. While caramel is among the most popular flavors, coconut is not quite so universally loved. But like many other fans, we were pleasantly surprised—turns out, this is just the right blend of these two flavors. As one reviewer noted, it helps that you don’t have the typical coconut texture that some people dislike. Another reviewer admitted these are their “guilty pleasure,” and we can totally relate.
5. Lemon OREO
This flavor seems to have prompted a lot of debate, as people either love it or hate it. These cookies have golden wafers with lemon-flavored crème. One online commenter proclaimed them “totally awesome,” and another deemed them “my absolute favorite cookie” while lamenting that they can be scarce in stores. If you’re lucky enough to spot this elusive flavor, you might want to grab several packs.
4. Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie OREO
One of the things that make this variety of OREO stand out is that it deviates from the standard chocolate or golden wafer—instead going with a graham-flavored cookie. Then there’s the crème, which is half chocolate and half peanut butter. Most fans agree that this is a winning combination.
3. Mint OREO
This is another one of those “love it or hate it” flavors. People tend to have strong feelings about mint, but if you are in the (sizeable) pro-mint camp, you will likely love this variety. One online reviewer proclaimed them “delectable” while another loved the “mouth-watering” flavor. Taking a page from the Thin Mints rulebook, we bet these would be great frozen.
2. Peanut Butter OREO
This is the standard chocolate wafer OREO but with peanut butter crème, which peanut butter fans will consider an irresistible upgrade! One fan raved that it is “done to perfection.” Target shoppers give this a 5-star rating, so that group of shoppers is unanimous in their love of this combo.
1. Original OREO
Was there ever any doubt? It’s hard to beat the original, and the classic universally loved OREO cookie will always have a special place in our heart—and our glass of milk. The chocolate wafer is just chocolatey enough and the filling is smooth and creamy. In a word, it's perfection. Never change, OREO!

Honorable Mentions
OREO Thins
We didn’t include OREO Thins in our rankings because they’re technically not different flavors, just thinner versions of some of the core flavors. As their name suggests, they're thinner and crispier and might be a good option for those who prefer their cookies with less crème (and fewer crumbs). Oreo Thins are available in these six flavors:
OREO Thins Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
OREO Thins Tiramisu Creme Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
OREO Thins Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, Mint Flavored Crème
OREO Thins Golden Sandwich Cookies
OREO Thins Golden Sandwich Cookies, Lemon Flavored Crème
OREO Thins Extra Stuf Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

Double Stuf and Mega Stuf OREO
As with the Thins varieties, these aren’t separate flavors, just some of the core flavors with extra crème. The Double Stuf variety, now available in both golden and chocolate, debuted in 1974, and then the Mega Stuf version of the original flavor, which is stuffed with triple the crème, joined the roster in 2013. And yeah. We're bothered by the single "f" as well.
OREO Gluten Free Cookies
It doesn’t seem fair to rank the gluten-free varieties against the standard OREO options because it's a completely different cookie experience. Reviews are mixed on these, with some commenters saying the flavor is close to the original, and others saying there’s a noticeable difference. We suggest giving them a try if you’re seeking a gluten-free snack—and be sure to read the ingredients list carefully in case they contain anything you need to avoid. Gluten-free OREOs come in these three flavors:
Gluten Free OREO
Double Stuf Gluten Free OREO
Gluten Free Mint OREO
