Britney Spears Blessed Us With Some Thoughts About Her Breakup With Justin Timberlake

If you felt the entire world shift today, it wasn't mother nature or tectonic plates, it was the world reacting to Britney Spears finally offering up some insight into her relationship with Justin Timberlake. In a new Instagram post, Spears is doing her usual, flipping her hair and peacocking for the camera, but her choice of music and a casual aside in her caption got fans internally (and externally, in some cases) screaming. The clip was set to Timberlake's song "Filthy" and Spears called her ex a "genius," adding that the track is a "great song." If that's not cordial and proves that there are no hard feelings between the two, it can't get much clearer.

"I know we had one of the world's biggest breakups 20 years ago …… but hey the man is a genius !!!! Great song JT," she wrote.

Timberlake caught wind of the homage, responding with a crying/laughing emoji and a trio of clapping hands. Comments by Celebs captured it and cemented the moment for every Justin/Britney stan.

It's not the first time that Spears has used a Timberlake jam. She posted a backflip video using his song "LovedStoned/I Think She Knows" in 2018, but today's update offers up the most direct and transparent reference to their relationship since things fizzled out in 2002. Fans of both Timberlake and Spears will remember when the two ruled the TRL generation, wore matching denim getups, and basically became the pop world's golden couple. When they split up, hearts were broken everywhere and the two moved on, with nary a word from either one of them — though there were plenty of songs, ahem, "Cry Me a River," that could have referenced the relationship. Since the breakup, Timberlake has moved on with wife Jessica Biel. As for Spears, she's currently dating and quarantining with her boyfriend Sam Asghari.
