Britney Spears Explains What Led Her to Shave Her Head in 2007

Britney Spears' new memoir, The Woman in Me, features many surprising revelations about the pop star's life, and in a sneak peek of the book, Spears revealed what led her to shave her head in 2007.
Many remember the news coverage when Spears took a razor to her head, getting rid of her signature long hair. But until now, Spears never gave her side of the story about why she did it.
In an except from the book, Spears describes how unhappy she was at the time, writing, "I’d been eyeballed so much growing up. I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager."
"Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back," she stated, explaining that she got rid of her hair in an attempt to have some semblance of control.
But according to Spears, it didn't work, as she went on, "But under the conservatorship I was made to understand that those days were now over. I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take."
The incident in which Spears shaved her head occurred in between visits to rehab as she was getting a divorce from husband Kevin Federline. The singer reportedly went to Esther’s Haircutting Studio and asked the owner, Esther Tognozzi, to shave off her hair. When Tognozzi refused, Spears took hold of a razor nearby and did the job herself.
Shortly after, in 2008, Spears' father, Jamie Spears, became her legal guardian, and it wasn't until 2021 that the conservatorship was officially terminated in court.
Spears' new memoir, The Woman in Me, comes out on Oct. 24.
