Court Hearing Decides Not to Change Britney Spears's Conservatorship

Britney Spears's Brother, Bryan, Said That Her Conservatorship Is a "Great Thing"

The comment comes as the #FreeBritney movement returns to the headlines.

Update August 20, 2020: People confirmed that Britney Spears's conservatorship will remain unchanged through February 1, 2021. The judge in the case requested that Spears's lawyer file a petition with the court to remove her father, Jamie Spears, as conservator by September 18, and that any objections to the request would need to be filed by October 2.

After the decision, Spears posted a video on Instagram thanking her fans, although she didn't address the conservatorship directly.

"I feel like we will look back at this time in quarantine as a huge transitional stage in our lives ….. we don't know when things will go back to normal but we are staying positive and learning so much about ourselves !!!! For me I want to thank all my dear ... sweet ... real fans for being so damn wonderful !!!" she wrote. "I can feel your hearts and I know you can feel mine ... thank you for your support!!!"

Update August 19, 2020: According to TMZ, after a court hearing held on Wednesday, Britney Spears's conservatorship was not changed in any way. The site reports that the hearing wasn't intended to change any details of the conservatorship. It was actually just a "scheduled status conference."

In order for major changes to be made to Spears's situation, additional documents need to be submitted to the court. TMZ's sources add that because of a "declaration" in the case that states "[Spears is] not able to make important life decisions because of her mental illness," there may be problems granting her wishes in regards to who is in charge of her conservatorship.

Previously: In new court filings, Britney Spears's court-appointed attorney states that the signer would rather not have her father, Jamie Spears, return as her sole conservator after the pandemic. E! News reports that Spears would rather have Jodi Montgomery, a member of Britney's team that handled the conservatorship when Jamie stepped away from the position in 2019, take over.

"Britney is strongly opposed to having James return as conservator of her person. Rather, she strongly prefers to have Ms. Montgomery continue in that role as has done for nearly a year," court documents read. "Without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, Britney would like Ms. Montgomery's appointment as conservator of her person to be made permanent."

Jamie had been in charge of Britney's "financial, legal, and career decisions" since 2008, according to E!. Additionally, he oversaw all of her medical care until he faced a health scare himself, which prompted Britney to temporarily suspend her Las Vegas residency. Jamie was supposed to go back to being conservator on January 20, 2020. His position also put him in charge of Britney's estate, but today's court filings also mention that she wants that to change, too.

Moving forward, Britney "strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve in this role." Her attorney will "seek input from all parties and make appropriate orders to facilitate the implantation of [Britney's] wishes."

Spears's family has been vocal about the situation, with her brother, Bryan, saying that Jamie was doing what he thought was right.

"In general, [Jamie's] done the best he could given the situation he's in," Bryan said during an appearance on the As Not Seen on TV podcast.

Jamie spoke to the New York Post as the #FreeBritney movement was making headlines, saying, "All these conspiracy theorists don't know anything. The world don't have a clue," he told the publication. "It's up to the court of California to decide what's best for my daughter. It's no one else's business."

Courts will decide what changes will be made to Britney's conservatorship soon, including whether or not it will be extended beyond August 22.
