Bullington Gardens celebrates 20 years, gears up for popular spring plant sale

Bullington Gardens, which is celebrating 20 years this year, is gearing up for its popular spring plant sale, and it's quickly approaching.

The plant sale at the nonprofit botanical garden at 95 Upper Red Oak Trail is set for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 25-27. According to a news release, Friends of Bullington will receive an exclusive early-bird shopping invitation. In addition to spring plants, there are also a wide variety of vegetables, according to Annie Higgins, Bullington Gardens administrative director.

"The vegetables that Bullington has primed are organically produced and have been chosen for hardiness, flavor and uniqueness," she said. "Even though gardeners are tempted to get their vegetable starts in the ground, it's better to be safe than sorry. Mother’s Day is our go-to day to start planting tender herbs and veggies."

Over the years, Bullington Gardens’ plant sales have gained a reputation for offering a diverse selection of plants, the release said.

“It is remarkable to think how the spring plant sales at Bullington have grown from a few tables of seedlings to a lawn full of enticing opportunities for plant lovers,” said Jane Davis, the original sale organizer, in the release.

Together with another long-time volunteer, Betty Lockwood, and former director John Murphy, the first sale offered a few herbs and a modest selection of plants gleaned from the greenhouse. This year’s sale runs for three days to accommodate the many plant shoppers looking for the unique and quality plants they’ve come to expect.

According to the release, when deciding what to grow for 2024, Bullington’s greenhouse team focused on natives, plants that attract pollinators, trees, shrubs, new introductions and classic favorites. The sale also includes vegetable starts, including 15 types of tomatoes, unique herbs and pollinator annuals.
