How to Buy Salehe Bembury’s New Balance 530 ‘Prosperity Be the Prize’ Sneaker
More from Footwear News
After months of teasing and a Copenhagen-only giveaway, Salehe Bembury is gearing up to release his next New Balance collaboration.
Bembury announced over the weekend that his New Balance 530 “Prosperity Be the Prize” will drop in just a matter of days. The sneaker’s campaign stars the actor Michael Ealy, who is taunted with the sneaker by a panda in a bamboo garden. To land a pair, Ealy has to play a bamboo flute while the panda breakdances.
Bembury’s take on the 530 sees the suede and mesh upper rendered in shades of mustard and neon green, while the midsole is rendered in sand. Small bits of aqua blue leather trim hit the upper along with metallic silver paneling, and the outsole is made up of purple and green to go along with a pink Abzorb heel unit. The metallic silver “N” logo takes on Bembury’s signature fingerprint motif, and his name appears on a hang tag below the lateral collar. Dual-branding then appears on the tongue.
Originally released in 1992 as a performance running sneaker, the 530 is in the early stages of a revival that just began this year. Miu Miu transformed the model into a flat for one of the hottest collaborations of the year, which has since been succeeded by additional colorways and another transformation into a mule.
Bembury taking on the 530 suggests it will take on increased prominence in New Balance’s slate, looking to follow the success of other archival models such as the 1906R and 2002R, both of which he has also collaborated on.
Bembury first revealed the “Prosperity Be the Prize” sneaker in June before giving out pairs in August during an event in Copenhagen.
The Salehe Bembury x New Balance 530 “Prosperity Be the Prize” will release Tuesday, October 29, through Bembury’s Be a Spunge website. Pricing has not yet been confirmed.
