This calendar of bearded, burly men in fish tails raised nearly $250,000 for charity

In 2017, 30 men in mermaid fish tails gathered for a photo shoot. Now they’ve helped raise nearly $250,000 for Spirit Horse Newfoundland, a charity that pairs therapeutic horses with adults in need of mental health services.

The men, members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Beard and Mustache Club, banded together to pose for the calendar. The Merb’ys calendar features shirtless men of all ages and body sizes in fish tail costumes. (Merb’ys comes from “b’y,” a Newfoundland word for “boy.”)

Some are pictured lounging on rocks, others are perched atop a balcony, and still others are getting a haircut. According to the group’s website, “If you like your mermen bearded and your charities to do amazing things locally, this is the calendar for you!”

As Metro News reports, the club raised $300,466.53 (Canadian) for Spirit NL. “What an amazing feeling to have been part of this wildly successful campaign. @SpiritHorseNL deserves every penny to help them make their programs accessible to those who need it the most,” wrote Hasan Hai on Twitter. The club reportedly sold more than 14,000 calendars in just three months.

Spirit NL recently announced a Giving Hope scholarship made possible by the calendar. Details aren’t available yet, but the organization will begin taking applications for the new program on January 31.
