Carol Burnett Is Bringing Her Memoir to the Big Screen
From a storied career to a deep love for her grandmother—as evidenced by an ever-present tug on her left earlobe—there are countless reasons to love actress and comedian Carol Burnett. Audiences will soon get a deeper look into the star’s life, as well as her relationship with her daughter Carrie, because Burnett’s 2013 memoir Carrie and Me is set to receive the big screen treatment.
Carrie and Me: A Mother-Daughter Love Story tells the story of Burnett’s life with her eldest daughter, Carrie Hamilton, who struggled with drug addiction in her youth, achieved sobriety and success in her career as an adult, and died in 2002 at age 38 after a battle with cancer. The memoir was published in 2013 as a tribute to Burnett’s daughter after her untimely passing.
As reported by Deadline, Burnett is developing the book into a film for Focus Features alongside writer and comedian Tina Fey (SNL, 30 Rock). Burnett, Fey, and their production companies are attached to produce alongside Stephen Rogers. Ian and Eshom Nelms, brothers who wrote and directed 2017 film Small Town Crime, are set to adapt the screenplay.
Burnett’s other work includes The Carol Burnett Show, which aired for 11 seasons, hosted countless guest stars, and launched the careers of numerous comedians; a star turn as Miss Hannigan in the 1982 film Annie; and several memoirs, including the most recent, 2016's In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox.
