Carole Middleton Is Teaching Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis to Garden

You might think of the royal family as polished and pristine, but it's no secret that the Windsors have a love of the outdoors—one that's getting passed down to the Cambridge kids from both sides of the family. Carole Middleton, mom of Kate Middleton and grandmother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, recently sat down for an interview with Saga magazine and revealed that she's getting her grandkids out into the garden to foster their interest in nature and growing plants.

"It's important for children to grow up appreciating nature and part of that is allowing them to get a bit muddy," she said, explaining that she like to set up stations for the kids in the garden to keep them engaged. "If I'm doing planting with my grandchildren, I like to have it all laid out at 'activity stations' with their own little trowel and pot so they can get started immediately. It's no good calling children over to an activity, only for you then to have to fuss about looking for the right equipment and clearing a space. They'll soon lose interest and slope off."

Carole says she's been growing her own vegetables alongside the kids, including potatoes, onions, beets, and carrots. "There's no better way to encourage healthy eating than to allow your grandchildren to see how food is grown and let them pick their own."

It's a tradition she clearly passed down to Kate as well, who's developed a reputation for her royal green thumb. The Duchess of Cambridge has historically been involved in the famed Chelsea Flower Show, as with the Back to Nature Garden she designed for the event in 2019, where George, Charlotte, and Louis helped out with putting the finishing touches on the playful patch of outdoor space.
