Carolina Herrera Passes the Torch to Wes Gordon
On Monday, Carolina Herrera will show her final collection at New York fashion week. And after that? At 79, and with 37 years at the helm of her namesake brand, she's stepping aside to take on the role of global brand ambassador, appointing Wes Gordon creative director, the New York Times reports. Gordon has been a creative consultant at Carolina Herrera for the last year.
Herrera's first show was in 1981; in the decades since she's become known for an inimitable refined elegance. "Just don’t say I am retiring," she told the Times. "I am not retiring! I am moving forward."
In the years since in which she's helped define a modern civility in fashion, Herrera points out that the industry has changed. "What they like now is ugliness. Women dress in a very strange way. Like clowns. There is a lot of pressure to change all the time. But it’s better to wear what suits you. Add something new and you have a great look. Consistency is important," she says. Happily, Gordon, who is known for the cool and classic femininity of his designs, shares this somewhat retro ideology. Here's sending best of luck to both in their new roles.
