Carve a Llama Pumpkin for Halloween
What You'll Need
Pumpkin carving knife
Large spoon
Pumpkin scraping tool
Poking tool
Drill and thin drill bit
Prep Your Pumpkin
Choose a pumpkin with a smooth surface for this carving; since the llama design is taller than it is wide, we chose a tall pumpkin. Cut a hole in the base of the pumpkin and scoop out the insides until the rind is clean. Cutting a hole in the base rather than the top keeps the visible parts of the pumpkin looking nice longer.

Carve the Llama
Using our free llama stencil, trace the outline of the design onto your pumpkin with a poking tool designed for pumpkin carving. If you don't have this tool, you can use a needle or a thumbtack for this step. Use a scraping tool to scrape the indicated areas, using long, thin movements—this will make the scraped areas resemble fur. Be careful not to scrape the areas of the stencil that are shaded black; the black areas on the stencil indicate shapes that should remain untouched.
When you've finished scraping the indicated areas, use a drill with a long, thin bit to drill holes in the rind. You can follow our pattern or give your llama a custom look. When you're done, add a candle and put your llama on display!
