Cassville students brighten town with new murals
CASSVILLE, Mo. — Folks traveling through Cassville are being welcomed in a new and vibrant way.
“It really brightens people’s moods, I had people coming by every single day, telling us, ‘Wow, guys this is truly amazing’,” said Joei Blankenship, Cassville High School junior.
It’s just the start of what’s to come in Cassville – as high school art students are in the midst of an ongoing project that is bringing a number of new murals to the area, drawing people to the more central and forgotten parts of town.
Like the new “welcoming” mural, located on Main Street.
“It took us two-and-a-half, maybe three weeks and then after that, it wasn’t completely done – we had to come back on the last day and kind of work on that. Probably the hardest part about it was getting up on those tall ladders, because you would be up there and be like, your feet are hurting? Yeah, my feet are hurting too,” said Blankenship.
A class of seven Cassville art students painted the mural, with the intent of creating something folks can enjoy, for generations to come…
“I hope that they enjoy leaving their mark on the town because we will varnish these, they’ll last 40-50 years at least before they need touch-up. They’ll get to bring their kids around and say, ‘hey, I painted this, you know when I was 15’,” said Teall Williams, Cassville High School art teacher.
Blankenship says, leaving her mark on the town wasn’t easy…
“Long summer days, it was very hot. Every single day, we were like – put sunscreen on, we don’t want to burn. I told her one day, ‘make sure to dress cool because I do not want to be out there sweating,” said Blankenship.
The group will continue to create new murals around Cassville this summer – but are waiting to find their next project site.
