The Cause of Bronny James' Cardiac Arrest Has Been Determined
Just a month after Bronny James—son of the legendary Lebron James—went into cardiac arrest during team practice at USC, the cause of the incident has been revealed.
In a new statement obtained by The Athletic's Shams Charania, a spokesperson for the family shared that Bronny has been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.
“After a comprehensive initial evaluation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center led by Dr. Merije Chukumerije and follow-up evaluations at the Mayo Clinic led by Dr. Michael J. Ackerman and Atlantic Health/Morristown Medical Center led by Dr. Matthew W. Martinez, the probable cause of Mr. James’ sudden cardiac arrest has been identified,” the statement began. “It is an anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect which can and will be treated."
The statement added that the family is "very confident" that the basketball player will make a complete recovery—and get back in the game–"very soon," though it did not specify what congenital defect he has.
Bronny, who is just 18, collapsed last month, on July 24, and was quickly treated by USC athletics’ medical staff and transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where the hospital said he arrived "fully conscious, neurologically intact and stable" thanks to their quick actions.
He returned home just three days later, with Lebron tweeting out his gratitude for everyone's support during the tumultuous time: "I want to thank the countless people sending my family love and prayers. We feel you and I'm so grateful. Everyone doing great. We have our family together, safe and healthy, and we feel your love."
While Bronny has remained quiet about the health scare, he was spotted having dinner out with his family just two days after being discharged.
