It took a lot of self control to not shop for my fall wardrobe ahead of Labor Day. But with the unofficial end to summer now behind us (I know it’s been less than 24 hours, but I’m excited), I’m finally giving myself permission to start that closet refresh. And while there are the obvious staples I grab every year—sweaters, jeans, boots—there’s one less traditional item I’m prioritizing after talking to celebrity stylist Jared Ellner.
Ellner, who dresses pretty much every Gen Z It girl in Hollywood—including Emma Chamberlain and Sabrina Carpenter—recently partnered with Uniqlo, and spoke with InStyle about his work with the brand and the fall trends he’s loving this season. While straight-leg jeans and sheer tights made the list, there was one staple I didn’t predict, but which I’m immediately grabbing: Pleated wide-leg pants.
Wide-leg trousers, which have been worn by Jennifer Lawrence, Katie Holmes, and Kendall Jenner, are “universally flattering,” said Ellner. What’s more, they’re “versatile for any occasion;” sneakers and a baby tee make them a cool-girl essential while a pump instantly dresses them up. The pants are comfortable, practical, and wardrobe elevating, which makes them a no-brainer for fall. Below, shop the styles I’m eyeing, starting at $18.

Prettygarden Wide-Leg Pants, $26 with coupon (Originally $33); amazon.com

J.Crew Sydney Wide-Leg Pants, $75 (Originally $128); jcrew.com
Banana Republic Factory Tencel Wide-Leg Pants
If you want to try this trend for less, make sure to grab these trousers from Banana Republic’s outlet store while they’re on sale for just $18. These pants prioritize style and comfort equally, pairing the more sophisticated silhouette with soft Tencel and an elastic waistband; it’s a duality that shoppers say makes the style “perfect for every occasion.” And despite that low (like, really low) price, fans rave that the “quality is excellent” and that the trousers “look expensive.”
Everlane the Draper Pleated Pants
Since Everlane’s Draped Pleated Pants are a favorite of more than 200 shoppers, they immediately shot to the top of my wishlist. But I’m not grabbing them just because they’re a fan-favorite, I also love how relaxed this wide-leg is. The slouchiness gives these pants a really cool, everyday feel, making them the perfect trousers for sneakers and a T-shirt.
Prettygarden Wide-Leg Pants
These pants from Prettygarden quickly became one of my favorites after noticing that belted detail at the waist. Poking out from the crossover waistband are two decorative belts; it’s a small detail that instantly makes the style chicer than your typical wide-leg trousers. Plus, they’re available in 14 colors, which makes it easy to find a style (or two) to complement your wardrobe.
Uniqlo Pleated Wide Pants
Ellner told me that his favorite style is Uniqlo’s wide-leg pants, which I’m loving for their more masculine look. Where other styles add some flare, these are pretty no-nonsense: they’re loose but not totally oversized with polished pleats. They also happen to be a favorite of shoppers. A curvy customer wrote that they were impressed by how well the trousers flattered their figure, while others said that they’re “comfortable and elegant,” and practically wrinkle-resistant.
Zara Double-Waist Wide-Leg Pants
Drawstrings and dressed-up trousers might not be a classic pairing, but after seeing how cool Jennifer Lopez looked in a similar style—her wide-leg jeans were fastened with a white string—I’m all in on them. This $50 pair from Zara has that classic wide-leg silhouette, pleats down the front, and a white, drawstring waistband that pokes out from the top. It creates the illusion that you layered your favorite trousers over silky drawers for a look that’s fresh, modern, and kind of sexy.
