In mid-March, when shelter-in-place orders were first enacted, many responded to staying at home with an almost feverish can-do approach. People we’ve never seen work out before were doing fitness tutorials on their social media accounts, there were beauty routines, volunteering ideas, closet clean-outs, and banana bread, so much banana bread. Now that we’re nearly two months into the Covid-19 pandemic, let’s just say some are losing steam. There is illness and economic hardship, so much to worry for and fear, but there is also community—albeit virtual—and there is fashion. For a certain type, there’s nothing that will change a mood faster than a look that’s, well, a mood. BAZAAR wrangled some of the fanciest, fiercest, chicest we know to step out of their yoga, track, pj, and sweat pants for a minute, and dress to the absolute nines as a nod to a brighter, forever changed, but ideally more sparkly future. In recognition of our present, each has let us know what they do to cope, and the organizations and charities they trust to aid those most in need right now. From Elizabeth Hurley to Helena Christensen, Kiki Palmer and Normani, and so many more, they turned up in their best Versace, Balmain, Balenciaga, and Bottega and sent us the photos as receipts.

Elizabeth Hurley,
Actress

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
There are nine of us. I have my whole family here including my elderly mother, an aunt, and a friend who has severe respiratory problems. I’ve been completely paranoid that I won’t be able to keep them safe, and I haven’t let anyone leave the house apart from me for eight weeks now. I just nip out to local food stores in mask and gloves. I’m terrified of bringing the virus in to my vulnerable guests.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I’m really missing seeing my friends, but I think it will be a long time before I want to be in a crowded place. I’m hoping to be able to see people who have also been very careful and observed all the lockdown protocols.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
I’ve got a zillion great memories and I can remember what I was wearing in all of them. The dress I unearthed for this shot is Atelier Versace—I wore it 21 years ago to the CFDA Fashion Awards. I was with my then-boyfriend Hugh Grant and had a blast. I put it away in acid-free tissue paper straightaway, and it’s still perfect!

What’s one activity you do at home to keep your hope up?
I’ve been gardening like a fiend. I’ve been very bossy and made all my houseguests—apart from the elderly—do three hours of manual labor a day in return for their keep.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I’ve been giving to our local food banks and sending food directly to people in need. Also, because I’ve been the global ambassador for the Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Campaign for more than 20 years, I’ve been working to make sure that the charity doesn’t suffer during this terrible time. I’m currently working on my part to present our annual fund-raising gala in virtual form, it’s on May 20 at 7:45 p.m. ET, and you can register and join us on Reg.BCRFHotPinkEvening.org

Helena Christensen,
Model

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
I’m in upstate New York with my son and my friend Camilla. We stay as active as we can, both physically and artistically, to stay calm and focused in our heads. We do a lot of photo shoots and little films. It has been a blessing to have nature right outside. I also have been cooking a lot and tidying up, watching movies, and looking through books. The fact that I get to be with my son all over again has been like a beautiful gift handed to me from the universe in this difficult time.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I will fly back to Denmark to be with my family.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
We’re raising money via our website staerkandchristensen to donate to @citymeals as they’re providing homebound elderly New Yorkers with meals during this quarantine period when even more people need their wonderful service. This pandemic is about a lot of things but I feel it’s important that the world regard the elderly from a new perspective, one that sees more attention and care being provided and, more than anything, more respect and love.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
I have a minidress by the Spanish designer Sybilla. It was one of the first pieces I ever bought with money saved up when I moved to Paris in my late teens. It’s like a patchwork of a sunset in all different beautiful faded colors. It’s a dream dress.

Normani,

Singer

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
I’m on lockdown with my mother and grandmother. I’m able to sit with my grandmother and have story time, which I love. I’m also grateful for technology. I can’t begin to tell you how many Zoom meetings and margarita nights I’ve attended. I’m really missing my father during this pandemic. I FaceTime him literally every day. I watched my parents spend their anniversary over Zoom, and it was still super romantic. I was definitely the creep watching from the corner. I love love so much. I’m also continuously working toward finishing my album. It’s been really exciting for me to randomly play my new records for all of my cousins while in our group chats. I couldn’t ask for a more supportive group of hype women.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I would definitely have to say the studio (and possibly Salt & Straw). I’ve been working and recording in the confines of my home, but nothing truly compares to being in the physical presence of my friends and feeling each other’s energy. I’m also a super-introvert and just might have a problem with leaving my home once this is all over. I literally wake up, go to the kitchen, record, go to the kitchen, have my yoga session, write to a beat that I love, and go to the kitchen.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
I get extremely excited anytime the women in my life pass anything down. I’m such a fan of all the vintage clothing that they had from the ’90s; the fashion from that time truly gives me a broader perspective on that era, especially because it’s also an era I really appreciate musically. I came across a vintage baby blue bustier in my godmother’s closet recently that really gave me a glimpse of who she was before my time. I love tapping into their energy and using clothing as an escape. I’m also obsessed with my SavageX. Rih really did her thing.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I’ve been a strong advocate of supporting small local businesses and feeding families in need. It's also been equally as important to me to be vocal about safety, social distancing, and awareness during this Covid-19 crisis. I’m all about strength in community, especially as it relates to my Southern roots and keeping everyone uplifted and as educated as possible during this time. I’m currently working with a handful of different organizations to bring financial relief and medical support to families in both Houston, Texas, and New Orleans. I’m hopeful for healthier and happier times ahead of us to come sooner than later.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I just did the Jackbox.tv game play with Jack Black, Olivia Wilde, and Jason Sudeikis for Save the Children. We had fun and were able to raise money that will go to helping kids who so desperately need it, especially right now.

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other? If you’re alone, what are you doing to manage?
I’m in France with my family. It’s a moment that pushes us to communicate, exchange. Talking to one another is a way of not feeling locked up in our house. I feel more grounded when I can express myself through words and art. But I’m still spend time alone in my bedroom painting and reading. I’m expanding my heart and mind creatively as much as possible. This is a time to learn, and I’m doing my best to do just that.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I think I’d go to a park with my friends and do nothing, just enjoy the sunshine and time being with the people I love. Then I’ll have a gourmet coffee on a terrace in Paris and feel connected to the city and the people in the streets.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I’ve always participated in or been a part of associations that fight for human rights in the world via health or politics, which you can support through one-time donations or organizations like Aides, Amnesty International, or Secours Catholique.

What charitable causes are you doing during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I’ve been a part of a few fashion-related charities such as AmFAR with Carine Roitfeld. I’ve also donated medical supplies to doctors. I think everyone doing their small part always makes for a better whole.

Elizabeth Sulcer,
Stylist

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other? If alone, what are you doing to manage?
I’m at home with my husband, Tom Palmer, and my 20-month-old son, Stone Palmer, in our home in Tribeca. It’s been a challenge establishing a new routine, as Stone consumes a lot of our free time, and my husband and I are still running our businesses remotely. However, I’m really trying to use the free time I do have to be creative and push my brand forward so that when we emerge in this new world, I will be able to offer people ideas of substance and true value that have staying power against a new economic background. We cherish this unique family time together; it’s a chance to see my son grow and develop in ways I could not have imagined, especially in the formerly chaotic world I was used to.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I’ve been collaborating and posting with a few brands to help them raise money for hospitals in New York City, as well as obtain funds and PPE for the city’s frontline workers during the outbreak. Specifically All Hands and Hearts, a foundation for disaster relief.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
I really love wearing denim and fine jewelry. I feel like there is nothing cooler than mixing a ’90s vibe with a glamorous touch of diamonds. It’s one of my signatures and can really lift one’s spirit and transport our everyday reality into a bit of a fantasy.

What’s one activity you do to keep your hope up?
A few activities that help keep hope up are yoga, meditation, FaceTiming with friends, and sunny socially distanced walks by the river with my son and husband. We’re also cleaning and organizing our home, cooking new healthy meals, reading a few interesting books, watching films by David Lynch and Terrence Malik, and catching up with friends and family worldwide via FaceTime and Zoom.

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
I’m home with my boyfriend. We haven’t spent this much time together in a really long time, so it’s been kind of nice. The most important part for us is to give each other space when we need it, because being 24/7 with the same person can sometimes be too much, so it’s important to recognize when you need some me time.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I think home to Portugal to see my parents. I miss them a lot.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other? If alone, what are you doing to manage?

I’ve stayed alone during this quarantine and completely isolated for two months. To be honest, I kind of love isolation. I’ve had the time to take a much-wanted break from everything, rest and reconnect with myself, and with the people I love. The only time I felt lonely was on my birthday. It was kind of hard but thank god my friends threw an awesome Zoom party for me.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I’ll go and see my parents. I have missed them so much. They live two hours drive from my home.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
All of my efforts are to personally give to people who I know have urgent needs to cover. There is no better satisfaction than to see the smile on their faces.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
A bra top and shorts from Khaite. They automatically teleport my state of mind to an exotic island, drinking a spicy margarita.

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
I’m at my sister’s house with my niece, nephew, my mom, and grandmother. It feels like going back to my teenage years, as I haven’t spent that much time with them since I left to become a model. We help each other with household chores like cooking and cleaning. I’m also taking care of my sister’s kids while she’s working from home, and I became my nephew’s teacher, which has been such a positive experience. I also work out a lot and meditate with my mom, which really helps during this challenging time.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I’m spending my confinement with most of my family, but my dad is still in the South of France, and I haven’t been able to go see him, so I can’t wait to hug him again.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?

Domestic violence is on the rise with the coronavirus lockdown. A lot of women are already not safe at home, and it’s been even more difficult for them and their children these past weeks. I’m the ambassador of Solidarite Femmes, an organization that works to eliminate violence against women, especially domestic violence in France. I also donated to the foundation of Paris’s h?spital. The hospital staff are on the front lines for us during this pandemic, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they’re doing and sacrificing to help and save us.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
I’m home with family, which has been a huge blessing because they have been an emotional pool of replenishment. Though we social distance, we still make sure we see each other almost every day! The connection and energy you share between each other is key.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I still feel pretty free, but the first place I would probably go is to a park and soak up the sun and be thankful for the life I have on this earth.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
There are so many pieces, but the one that truly puts me in a place of happiness is my shirtdress that says “Priority Style Pass.” It’s a reminder that I’m very human and still a stylish being in my natural state.

What’s one activity you do at home to keep your hope up?
Music is my activity. I play, create, sing, and listen to keep my and my family's spirits high. We play it to heal our souls. It’s definitely a plus and a boost to my high hopes.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
The charities that I would recommend as well as been a part of are the Trevor Project, the Ali Forney Center, and the Actors Guild, all of which focus on helping people who are in need of guidance, reassurance, and finances to keep them stable in this time of Covid-19, especially our younger generation.

Founder, All the Pretty Birds

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other?
I’m at home with my husband and son. Initially, my husband and I were self-isolating alone at home and my son was in Switzerland with his grandmother; he returned home three weeks ago. My husband and I support each other mentally during this period and share household tasks. Fortunately, we get along really well in general, so the restrictions and limitations of quarantine are relatively easy for us to manage together.

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
We’re already in phase 2 and are able to leave our homes as long as we practice social distancing and wear masks. We’re entering a new phase on Monday, May 18, when retailers and other businesses will open. The first place we went to when the restrictions were lifted was for a walk around the neighborhood. I’m not in a hurry to go out. I’m cautious because of individuals who find it difficult to follow rules like wearing masks and not convening in groups. I’m concerned that they will cause a new surge in cases. I hope I’m wrong. We will see what happens.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I’ve donated to the Italian Red Cross, Chiara Ferragni and Fedez’s fundraiser for a hospital in Milan, the Italian Civil Protection Agency, private Go Fund Me fundraisers for hospitals, and Marzy Jane’s fundraiser to raise money for mothers and birth workers of color.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
A 15-year-old summer cotton dress that I purchased at Barneys. I don’t even remember the brand, but I wear it every summer and pack it for every warm-weather vacation we take.

What do you do to keep your hope up?
I meditate and practice gratitude. Both are a constant source of tranquility and hope.

Who are you home with, and how do you support each other? If alone, what are you doing to manage?
I’m at home with my family—husband Thomas, and James, 8, and Stella, 6. We support each other by living very routined and structured schedules. We went into self-quarantine as soon as I came back from Paris Fashion Week, just to be on the safe side for ourselves and others. The kids had spring break and the schools closed right after, which made the process smooth. We adapted by trying to maintain normal routines but skipping anything outside of our apartment. Kids at this age are understanding when you explain these things properly to them, even though it’s not easy for them!

What’s the first place you’ll go when we’re able to move freely again?
I hope we can go on a long family vacation somewhere in nature. I crave it and I want the kids to run wild and free. I want to smell the summer evenings, feel the ground under my feet, and have the sunshine on my face. It might sound clichéd, but it really is what we miss the most.

What charitable cause are you giving to during the Covid-19 outbreak?
I have a long-standing relationship with the Good+ Foundation, one of the leading national nonprofit organizations working to dismantle multigenerational poverty by pairing tangible goods with innovative services for low-income fathers, mothers, and caregivers, which I did a fundraising initiative for. Aside from that I’ve always supported God’s Love We Deliver, and continue doing so during this pandemic and will do after.

What’s a piece or outfit in your closet that transports you to your happy place?
Right now anything that is not a sweatsuit lifts my mood. Yet there are days I love nothing better than wearing my sweats. With spring on our doorstep, I swapped hoodies for cropped tops, oversize men’s athletic tees for loose nightgown-like dresses, and wool socks for sandals (that haven’t been outside yet). I have days when I take a shower at 4:00 p.p. because there simply has not been time for “me” and that’s okay. Some days I get up at 6:30 and jump in the shower, make everyone’s favorite breakfast, and shoot two videos. It’s all about the balance.

What do you do to keep your hope up?

Just keep going. Keep doing what I do. Keep living the life I want, even though it’s not all possible. It’s the expectations I’ve reset so that I’m not constantly disappointed or disappointing myself. It’s given me so much peace! I talk with friends I love and women I see as my inspirations—we help each other. I take time for this now much more than I did before Covid-19. It's put so much in perspective just to find out that I’m okay, we’re okay, and the world will be, in time, okay.
