Chanel had initially hoped to stage a cruise show in Italy in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic forced it to cancel the planned event in Capri.

This year, it held the event in the southern French city of Marseille, signaling its desire to court a younger clientele sensitive to diversity. Poor online reaction to Virginie Viard’s collection, presented at Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse housing project, contributed to the designer’s sudden departure in June.

Under its late creative director Karl Lagerfeld, the Rue Cambon house was a pioneer in staging itinerant shows and over the years has taken its cruise collection as far afield as New York City, Venice, Singapore, Dubai, Seoul, Havana, Monaco and Los Angeles.

“More than an invitation to travel, the Chanel cruise show is an encounter with the energy and singularity of a destination whose inspirational art de vivre makes the whole world dream,” it said in a statement.
