Charlie Heaton Was Removed From a Stranger Things Scene for a Silly Reason
Another day, another behind-the-scenes secret from our fave sci-fi show, Stranger Things. Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on the beloved Netflix hit, joined GQ for a new edition of their "Actually Me" YouTube series on February 1. In the video, he went undercover and answered buzzy questions across different social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
While sharing fun facts about the making of Stranger Things, he reminisced back to season two when his co-star, Charlie Heaton, who plays Jonathan Byers, was removed from a scene because he couldn't stop laughing at Joe Keery's lines as Steve Harrington.
Finn said that scene was in the eighth episode of season two when the Hawkins crew was breaking down everything they knew about the Mind Flayer at the time. When Dustin (played by Gaten Matarazzo) is trying to explain his theories that the Mind Flayer wants to "conquer" the human race because it believes it's superior, Steve says, "Like the Germans." Dustin then corrects him and says, "the Nazis." This is the line that sent Charlie into a fit of laughter, which Finn says got him kicked off the set during filming.
"He was playing it so straight and it had to be one take, and every time he would say that Charlie would crack up," Finn explained to GQ. He also dished that Stranger Things showrunners the Duffer Brothers and David Harbour got so tired of Charlie's laughing that they just said "you know what, [he's] just not in the scene."
"We're like, 'what?' and they're like 'yeah Charlie you gotta go outside, you're laughing too hard,'" Finn recalled, adding that Charlie was removed from the scene during the editing process. In the final version that ended up on Netflix, Charlie's still in the scene but doesn't speak after Steve delivers the line.
