Charlize Theron says it perplexes people that she never wants to get married, but we totally get it

Charlize Theron never wants to get married. Revolutionary? No. Baffling to many? Somehow, yes. Although we’re living in 2019 and conventional relationship standards have evolved dramatically, some people are still stuck in the past. And by the past, we mean they think that marriage is the inevitable outcome and desire for adults in relationships. Not the case.

Theron wears many hats—actress, philanthropist, producer, mother—but wife will not be one of them, she says.

She recently opened up to Glamour to discuss her stance on marriage.

It’s true that society often puts pressure on women, specifically, to seek marriage as an ultimate goal. But Theron isn’t willing to bend to that pressure. Her outlook on life is steadfast, on everything from professional pursuits to personal beliefs. (It may be because, she also told Glamour, she follows her mom’s life advice: “Don’t take any shit.”)

Just like how marriage might be someone’s truth, remaining single is Theron’s.

Right now, Charlize is producing and starring in movies (including Bombshell, coming December 2019), traveling around the world, raising two children, and running her foundation, Theron Africa Outreach Project. A romantic relationship isn’t her number one priority, nor is it taking a back burner to other pursuits—she’s simply focused on other things.

It’s time we look at women for everything they are—professionals, travelers, mothers, fighters, humanitarians, and humans. Not just single women looking to become wives. We admire Theron for her razor-sharp confidence in who she is and the life she leads.
