Is This Charlize Theron or Sharon Stone at the 2000 Golden Globes?

It was the unlikeliest trend of 2019: the bowl cut. The often-maligned chop made headlines again and again when big names such as Kaia Gerber, Tallulah Willis, Natalie Portman, Celine Dion, and Charlize Theron all went for it. Call it a slow burn, call it a flash in the pan, call it real commitment, but know that way back in 2000, Sharon Stone did it and maybe inspired the current crop of bowl-cut devotees.

Stone shocked viewers when she arrived at the 2000 Golden Globes ceremony with the new style. Fans had seen her with short hair before, but the cut was a far cry from her usual polished styles. That year, she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for her role in The Muse and arrived with her then-husband, Phil Bronstein.

Theron's cut started out for her role in the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. The man behind the cut, Adir Abergel, explained that the style drew inspiration from '90s supermodels Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, but there's no doubt that Stone's show-stopping chop at the Golden Globes played a part, too.

"I think the traditional bowl cut was about creating a very circular silhouette around the perimeter of the head and was always cut a little too short around the front," Abergel told InStyle. "To add to that, the undercut was also always quite severe because it was cut with a buzzer versus a razor, along with scissors that left no soft edges anywhere. I think the reason this cut is back in style is because it's modern with soft and hard edges to it, and I think we will be seeing a lot more of it."

With so many celebrities hopping on the bowl-cut train, it's ready to be part of the conversation again, whether your inspo photos are of Stone back in '00 or today's bowl-cut evangelists.
