Chelsea Clinton is 'hopeful' that the TV version of NYT reporter's book on presidential campaign is fact-checked
Warner Bros. TV is adapting journalist Amy Chozick’s book about Hillary Clinton’s historic presidential campaigns, Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling, into a TV drama. Chelsea Clinton has one reservation about her mom’s story hitting the small screen, though.
Congrats Amy! Just saw this & hopeful that the TV adaptation contains the fact-checked version of my election night, hair, etc? Happy to connect the showrunner with my husband & the friends I spent 2016 election night with and the lovely man who cuts & styles my hair. Thank you! https://t.co/Swfw5pQYoP

Chelsea criticized the book when it first came out in April, claiming Chozick didn’t fact-check certain details. For one, Clinton claimed the book erroneously stated that she was drinking champagne on election night, as well as that she had a keratin treatment on her hair (which she says she didn’t).
Chozick pointed to the book’s author note to explain that it was technically a memoir — not a piece of journalism — because it tells her version of events. Still, the book was fact-checked according to Chozick.
Hi @amychozick! The 1st line (“Things were already looking bad when Chelsea Clinton popped the Champagne”) is false. I would have been happy to tell you that if you’d asked, which you didn’t. Looking forward to the correction once you fact check. Thanks! https://t.co/gqppfDEEW1

Hi @amychozick! Hearing there are more tidbits about me in your book which were easily fact checked and you fact checked…none of them. Here’s an easy one: I’ve never gotten hair keratin treatment. The others would have been equally easy!

Chelsea’s criticisms didn’t let up, and she continued to claim a fact checker never contacted her or her team to confirm personal details included in the memoir. So when she learned that Chasing Hillary was coming to TV, the former first daughter said she hopes it “contains the fact-checked version of my election night.” She added that she would happily connect the show’s staff with her husband and hair stylist to confirm what she says happened the night Donald Trump won the presidency (e.g., that she was pumping breast milk for her son, not popping champagne).
It’s unclear when the show will air, but it’s bound to be dramatic. The New York Times described the book as “The Devil Wears Prada meets The Boys on the Bus” and a “behind-the-scenes director’s cut” of the 2016 political coverage.
“This book won’t make you know Hillary any better. But it will help you understand why you don’t,” the Times review said.
It seems the same may be true for Chelsea.
