Chelsea Handler, who is proudly childfree, doesn't agree with banning kids from public spaces

Chelsea Handler may have no interest in motherhood, but the comedian still thinks the growing trend of banning children from public spaces is for the birds.

The Dear Chelsea host, 48, shared an Instagram video preview of the new episode of her podcast in which she discusses the growing trend of “no-kids zones,” which seek to create disturbance-free environments for adults by restricting children from entering. A CNN article claims there are nearly 500 of these spaces in South Korea.

“In South Korea, they have public spaces that are child-free zones, where you’re not allowed to have children. But it’s a public space and even I don’t agree with that,” the Chelsea, Lately alum told co-host Catherine Law in the clip. “Like, children are a part of our human family. You don’t have to have them, but you can’t outlaw them."

Handler clarified that the nature of a public space is its willingness to allow anyone to enter.

“If you have a business, fine, and you want to do that, that’s one thing, but public areas are for everybody,” she noted. "And this is me, everybody. We all know how I feel!”

Handler has been very open about why she isn't meant for motherhood. Last year during an episode of her podcast, she noted that she thinks she "would be a s***y mother."

"I would be selfish," she said. "I would want everything to be great for my kid and forget about all the other kids in the world.”

Handler explained that being child-free has actually allowed her to do more for others.

“I have so much availability for not only my nieces and nephews … but for other children in the world, because I don't have my own. If I had my own I would be all about them,” she explained. “I look at it like this — because I don't have my own children, I'm able to send strangers to college. I'm able to support kids that I'll never meet, in countries that I'll never even visit. But I'm able to give so much because I don't have my own family and to me, that is my purpose."

Handler also took to social media in 2022 following statements from Pope Francis in which he claimed that living without children is "a form of selfishness," and that some people have "dogs and cats that take the place of children." In response to his statements, Handler shared an Instagram post with the caption, “Me: I choose a life that is child-free and I feel fulfilled."
