On Sunday, the president announced in a tweet that Kirstjen Nielsen, secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, offered her resignation. Nielsen confirmed the news in her own tweet, adding that she will stay on through April 10 ahead of Kevin McAleenan taking over as acting secretary.
Its been an honor of a lifetime to serve with the brave men and women of @DHSgov. I could not be prouder of and more humbled by their service, dedication, and commitment to keep our country safe from all threats and hazards. pic.twitter.com/lIQ5iqGDmF

Nielsen has faced sharp criticism over her role in overseeing the separation of migrant children from their families at the border, a policy she defended even after the deaths of two children. In December, after Nielsen blamed migrant parents for putting “these minors at risk by embarking on the dangerous and arduous journey” to the border, actor and political artist Jim Carrey responded by labeling her a “kidnapper” in a painting.
Now we add a second child to your list of murders. Callin’ it your job don’t make it right, Fraulein Kirstjen. pic.twitter.com/ZYGo6Ny18N

Nielsen was also famously heckled by protesters shouting “shame!” as she dined at a Mexican restaurant in Washington, D.C. last June amidst backlash over family separations.
And despite reports suggesting that Nielsen is leaving the White House because Trump didn’t feel like she was tough enough at stopping immigration at the Southwest border, her stint enforcing his policies has left her with little sympathy.
Chelsea Handler, a vocal critic of the Trump administration, joked that Nielsen’s controversial job history would make her a natural for Fox News, while Don Cheadle tweeted that it will “give her a leg up.”
Best of luck to Kirstjen Nielsen. I’m not sure where you’ll get hired with a resume that includes “locking kids in cages.” I’m kidding, good luck at Fox News.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, meanwhile, decried the “deeply alarming” reports that Nielsen was not “extreme enough.”
As Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen oversaw the implementation of the Trump Admin’s increasingly toxic anti-immigrant policies. That she is reportedly resigning because she is not extreme enough for the White House’s liking is deeply alarming. https://t.co/MVKarszG06

Filmmaker Duncan Jones — son of David Bowie — used a Game of Thrones reference to muse about Nielsen’s exit.
Not surprising. All the white walkers are being recalled to the wall…
