Cher, 77, Gives Rare Insight Into May-December Romance With 37-Year-Old Boyfriend
Cher, Alexander Edwards
When Cher and Alexander "AE" Edwards were first romantically linked, some side-eyed their relationship for a simple fact: their 40-year age difference.
The couple—Cher, 77, an international pop star with decades of hits, and Edwards, 37, a music producer—immediately drew attention as a couple, prompting many to wonder how they met.
In an interview with ET Online, the "Believe" singer opened up about their first meeting while discussing her new album, Christmas. Cher explained that she met her boyfriend the same time she met rapper Tyga, with whom she sings "Drop Top Sleigh Ride" on her holiday album (Edwards also produced the track) at Paris Fashion Week in 2022.
Evidently, a friend pushed her to approach Edwards to ask about his teeth, which she assumed was a grill — but are actually diamond dental crowns. They hit it off and were later photographed together in the city.
Later, Edwards reached out to Cher's friend, jewelry designer Loree Rodkin, asking if she would pass along a photo of him and the pop star. Rodkin did one better: She gave Edwards Cher's phone number and told him to text it to her himself.
"I was in a place where I couldn't do much and I kept saying, 'I'm not the right woman for you," Cher told ET Online of being "too old" for his texts. "First of all, I'm 100 years older than you. And secondly, your friends [wouldn't think you were] cool if you were caught hanging with me, you know?' He said, 'Why don't you let me be the judge of that?' And then, we just happened."
Shortly after she and Edwards started dating, Cher addressed the May-December romance during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
"On paper, it's kind of ridiculous," Cher told Kelly Clarkson in December 2022. "But in real life, we get along great. He's fabulous."
Cher also spoke about her and Edwards' initial connection in an article published by People on Oct. 11.
“It was really shocking, because people just don’t give out my number,” she told the publication. “I had been telling all my friends, ‘We’re too old to go out with really younger men, and I will never fall in love on text.’ So I did what I said not to do!”

The "Turn Back Time" singer decided to break her own protocol “because he’s just so special,” she told People. Cher also said she's learned "it's never too late" for love.
“If you have happiness, you can’t think about how long it’s going to last,” Cher said. “You have to think about ‘How does it feel?’ and live in the moment.”
