Long before there was a Magnolia Market, young Chip and Joanna Gaines were newlyweds with an open itinerary and a vast open road ahead.

Following their 2003 wedding, the Waco, Texas-based couple embarked on their honeymoon starting with their first destination: New York City. The couple then drove through upstate New York into uncharted pockets of scenic New England, which eventually inspired their passion for farms, barns and home renovation.

In the newest issue of the Magnolia Journal, Joanna reflected back on that special excursion with her husband from nearly 15 years ago. “Chip and I have a standing date night once a week. We usually choose to stay close to home and rotate through our favorite dinner spots,” she wrote. “When a free afternoon presented itself on a recent Saturday, we decided to explore a little town about 40 miles away.”

The town of Clifton, Texas, is accessible by major roads, but Chip decided to go through backroads instead. “I protested only for a minute,” Joanna recalled, “and then realized that we had nowhere we needed to be and nothing but time.”

That drive, it turns out, evoked several old, familiar memories. “The beginning of our drive reminded me of our honeymoon, when we road-tripped up the New England coast, stopping in small towns and taking part in whatever happened to be that city’s claim to fame,” Joanna continued. “That was probably our favorite trip ever.”

During the couple’s honeymoon, the then-newlyweds marveled at old barns and silos (similar to what’s offered in Waco), while staying at cozy B&Bs and historical resort destinations.

During their most recent trip to Clifton, the two decided to enjoy the local town’s offerings by catching a movie and enjoying the main street’s cafes and shops. “This day felt like our honeymoon in more ways than just the familiarity of driving along unknown roads,” she concluded. “We were explorers again, finding our own way, still hand in hand.”

The Fixer Upper pair will soon celebrate 15 years of marriage on May 31, as well as the addition of their fifth child (she’s currently pregnant) into their growing family.
