Former HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines are preparing for the highly-anticipated launch of Magnolia Network, so you may be surprised to learn they still "don’t have a television" in their own home. As it turns out, this falls in line with their secret for creating "good" TV.

“The secret to good television is finding people who don’t want to be on television,” Chip recently told Fast Company at the magazine’s Innovation Festival.

Among the unassuming stars of the Magnolia Network are: Candis and Andy Meredith, a husband and wife team who renovated a 20,000-square foot school for their modern-day Brady Bunch family; Erin Benzakein, the founder of Floret Flower Farm, who goes on a year-long quest to build a sustainable organic flower farm in Washington state; and Erin French, whose Maine restaurant welcomes 50 diners a night after they place reservations through post card.

“We didn’t go out and do casting calls — anything like that. We just looked around,” Joanna told Fast Company. “It’s what they’re doing in real life that drew us to their story. Without the cameras on them, you could see the passion, you could see the drive, the risk. And then, when you’re watching, you’re like, ‘Now I want to go do that.'”

The Gaines aspire to create a network that brings families together, so maybe one day they'll finally gather in front of their own TV with the kids to watch the fruits of their labor.

“You see how everyone watches television now — everyone’s in their own room, on their own device,” Joanna said. “It’s no longer a thing of bringing families together. We got excited about just that idea of getting people back around that television, and being with family, and leaving and being inspired.”

Magnolia Network will debut in 2021 after being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
