Who is the Chloé Girl? A Ruffled, Sexy, Romantic English Rose
For lux bohemians, Chloé is Mecca. The label — which since its inception has counted Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, and Phoebe Philo amongst its designers— has been under the helm of Clare Waight Keller, a wispy British mother of two, since 2011. At her Spring 2016 show held Thursday morning during Paris Fashion Week, Keller proved once again that Chloé girls are all about casual femininity via looks ranging from track suits to rave pants to tent dresses.
In her show notes, Keller called the collection a tribute to “girls named Kate, Chloe, Cecilia, Corinne, Rosemary, Emma, Courtney and many others who embody the liberty and elegance of a perfectly mastered and excessively lived simplicity.” We can only figure these are mostly members of the Mossy Possé — i.e. Kate Moss pals the late Corrine Day and Rosemary Ferguson (her BFF/nutritionist). Keller also described the attitudes of these women as “careless sexiness, streetwear romantic, naturally sexy, technicolor dreams.” (That’s a lot of tude!)
First time attendee Dylan Penn said, “I loved how it felt casual, like bellbottoms with a flowy shirt in really amazing colors. I could see a lot of these pieces in Hair and Boogie Nights. Chloé is very feminine, yet keeps this modern, cool edge at the same time. I feel like that’s a hard thing to do—to pull off a suit and still make it look feminine and girly.”
Fashion consultant Shiona Turini added, “A key to being a Chloe girl: have a shiny loose wave, be French or French looking, and it helps if you have an equestrian background and an endless love of flowy blouses.”
Let’s break it down.
