Christian Cowan Is Designing the Costumes for New Musical ‘The Queen of Versailles’
Christian Cowan is getting into musical theater. The designer has been revealed as the costume designer for “The Queen of Versailles,” a new musical that will premiere this summer in Boston at the Emerson Colonial Theatre.
Kristin Chenoweth will star in the show as socialite Jackie Siegel, and F. Murray Abraham as her husband David Siegel, the founder of Westgate Resorts. The musical is based on Lauren Greenfield’s 2012 documentary “The Queen of Versailles,” which depicts the Siegel family as they set out to build a $100 million, largest-in-America personal residence in Florida. The 2008 recession throws a wrench into their lofty plans.

The show will be directed by Michael Arden, with music by Stephen Schwartz and a book written by Lindsey Ferrentino. Tickets are now on sale for the five week pre-Broadway run, which runs July 16 through Aug. 18.
“When I was 10 years old, my mother brought me to New York and I was lucky enough to see my first Broadway show,” Cowan said. “Ever since that day, I’ve considered musical theater and the costume design that comes with it as some of my favorite fashion moments of all time. I’m completely honored to be part of such an incredible production; working alongside industry titans such as Kristin Chenoweth, Stephen Schwartz, Michael Arden and Lindsey Ferrentino is a complete dream come true. I feel there could not have been a better first musical for me.”
