Christy Turlington Demonstrates How to Master Menswear

Menswear is a growing trend in women’s fashion. Everyone from Zendaya to Nicole Kidman to Cara Delevingne (she did star in DKNY’s 2015 menswear campaign) has taken a liking to loose suits and oxford shoes.

It probably has something to do with designers like Gucci and Prada ditching traditional gender norms on the runways. Now, it’s common for female fashion editors, street style stars and celebrities to wear what was formerly considered “menswear” from hot labels like Vetements or Gosha Rubchinskiy.

The latest celebrity to master menswear is Christy Turlington. The supermodel was spotted grabbing a coffee and riding the subway like a regular New Yorker yesterday, and she looked impossibly chic in head-to-toe menswear. Wearing a green herringbone coat, cropped wide-leg black trousers and classic leather brogues, Turlington was the epitome of how we wish we looked when we put on our menswear-inspired outfits. Instead, we kind of look like Oliver.

She looked completely carefree and effortless, like she had no intention of mastering menswear-for-women that day, but she just so happened to. The secret is in the layering and mismatched patterns, we think. The lightly patterned scarf against the herringbone coat would have distracted us from any slip-ups in the ensemble, of which there are none, of course, and also gives the outfit that masculine lackadaisical edge. The two different bags—one black leather shoulder bag and the other a camel suede tote with a black and white stripe—had the same effect.

So, the next time you’re trying to make menswear work for you, look back at this photo and take a note from Turlington.
