City of Henderson wants to add more public art and is looking for your opinion

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The City of Henderson is looking to bring more sculptures, murals, and permanent art to the city, and they want to know what kind of art you would like to see.

It all started in 2020 when the city turned to an artist to paint the benches on Army Street, but now that focus has turned into a mission to put art in every park in the city.

Megan Heeres recently joined the City of Henderson as their Visual and Public Arts Supervisor and oversees these public art projects. She said the art helps bring communities together.

“It helps to beautify, it helps to, I think, create belonging,” Heeres said. “It helps with place keeping and place making.”

With murals in 11 parks, decorated utility boxes, and three sculptures, it is a start. Now, the city is putting together an Arts Advisory Commission that will be made up of members of the community. They will start meeting this fall.

“The city is committed to art,” Heeres explained. “And we really want more feedback and having some experts there to help us make these decisions and make them more collaboratively because these do go in our public spaces.”

The art also serves as a deterrent against graffiti, but will have to be able to survive the summer heat.

“What we have noticed is putting art up really helps to curtail that but we also require artists to put a mural shield. Using high quality paint, using good pigment, and good sealant really helps to protect them.”
