The City of Paris Could Pay Tribute to Princess Diana Near the Site of Her Death
Nearly 22 years after Princess Diana's tragic death, the city of Paris is reportedly planning to honor the late royal by renaming a plaza after her. The space, which is near the site of her fatal car crash, will be called "Place Diana princesse de Galles," which roughly translates to Diana, Princess of Wales Square.
"We decided to rename the square because it had already been claimed on behalf of Diana by Parisians and tourists," a city hall official said, according to the Telegraph.
Indeed, the space has long been a place where members of the public have mourned the late Princess of Wales in Paris. The Flame of Liberty, which is a sculpture of a torch located near the proposed "Place Diana princesse de Galles," has served as an unofficial memorial to Diana for years.
While the name change for the location has yet to be officially approved, it's likely the necessary vote will pass in June.
"The new name will be officially inaugurated after a vote by the Paris council in June," reports the Telegraph. "Officials say the decision is firm and the change is certain to be approved."
When the name change does take place, the plaza will hardly be the only memorial to Princess Diana. Notably Kensington Palace, where Diana lived even following her separation from Prince Charles, features a memorial garden in honor of the Princess.
Just a few months before the 20th anniversary of her death, it opened to visitors, and tickets are included with admission to Kensington Palace.
