Apr. 5—Given that a Carnegie building originally housed the Cleburne Public Library — the building now serves as home to the Layland Museum — it's no surprise that former industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie held libraries near and dear to his heart.

"A library outranks any other thing a community can do to benefit its people," Carnegie said. "It is a never failing spring in the desert."

In that spirit, officials at the Cleburne Public Library look forward to celebrating National Library Week, which runs Monday through April 13.

This year's theme is "Ready, Set, Library!"

Sponsored by the American Library Association, National Library Week began in 1958 as a counter to the fact that, at that time, people were spending less on books and more on radios, TVs and musical instruments. Among other goals, National Library Week continues to encourage people to read more during their leisure time.

Cleburne Library Director Tina Dunham said it's about that and more.

"Serving the community at every age and every stage to provide lifelong learning is part of our mission," Dunham said. "Our library has something for everyone."

During the week, the library will offer fine forgiveness for overdue items returned.

Storyteller Vivian Rutherford will be on hand 4:30 p.m. Thursday for Fabulous Folktales, a youth program while members of the Cleburne Railroaders baseball team will pay a visit at 11 a.m. April 20. The library's Pizza & Poetry event takes place at 6 p.m. April 29.

Throughout the months, and in the months ahead, the library offers book clubs, chess club, maker lab classes and activities and a host of other events for all ages and interests.

"This year's them illustrates that idea that in our always online world, libraries give us the green light to something truly special," this year's National Library Week announcement reads. "A place to connect with others, learn new skills and focus on what matters most. No matter where you find yourself on the roadmap through life's journey, the library provides an inclusive and supportive community where everyone belongs."
