Cobbler creates unusual hack for social distancing: 'It’s like you’re on skis all the time'
If you’re having trouble always remembering to keep your distance from other people in public, a Romanian shoemaker has designed a product specifically for you.
Grigore Lup came up with the idea to make long-nosed size 75 shoes to keep people apart.
“If two people wearing these shoes were facing each other, there would be almost one-and-a-half meters (nearly 5 feet) between them,” Lup told Reuters.
The leather shoes look like they might be a little hard to walk in, but perhaps that will limit how much time people stay out in public places.
Lup is also known for his high-quality shoes. Prior to the pandemic, Lup had been making leather shoes for 39 years and made a large percentage of his income from custom orders from theaters and opera houses. As live performances started getting canceled in early 2020, Lup’s orders stopped coming in. He hopes these shoes might pick up the slack.
Since debuting his creation, Lup has received five orders for the shoes — which cost $115 per pair.
“Beautiful. It’s like you’re on skis all the time,” a woman posted on Lup’s Facebook page. “Brilliant idea!”
In response to a question about whether he was going to make a version for women, Lup joked, “Ladies pay more attention to social distancing, men are getting a little crowded!”
