It’s unknown exactly how and when coffee was discovered, according to the National Coffee Association of USA. The legend about its origin goes back centuries to a goat herder named Kaldi on the Ethiopian plateau.

Kaldi noticed his goats were so energetic after eating berries from a certain tree they didn’t sleep at night. He shared the discovery with the local monastery’s abbot, who made a drink with the berries that kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer.

Word spread and reached the Arabian Peninsula, where coffee cultivation and trade began. It was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia by the 15th century and was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria and Turkey by the 16th century.

Coffee was enjoyed in homes and public coffeehouses, which began to appear in cities across the Near East. In addition to drinking coffee, people frequented the popular coffeehouses for engaging in social activities: having conversations, listening to music, watching performers, playing chess and keeping current on the news.

Coffeehouses became important centers for the exchange of information and were referred to as “Schools of the Wise.”
