Comedy shows, 90s concerts and art shows are happening this weekend in Shreveport, Bossier

Kids in Caddo and Bossier Parishes are already heading back to school, marking the official end of summer vacation, but that doesn't mean the fun is over. Check out all of the fun things happening in Shreveport and Bossier city this weekend.

From many art exhibit openings to Film Prize's announcement party to comedy shows and 90s throwback concerts, there's something for everyone happening this weekend.

Friday, August 11

  • Film Prize Top 20 Announcement at the Robinson Film Center - Come out to RFC to celebrate the announcement of the 20 films headed to the annual Film Prize. This free event begins at 6:30 p.m. and there will be an afterparty down the road at 8:30 p.m. at Pepito XO with a special menu, drinks and music.

  • "Exaggerating Nature's Beauty" by Jennifer Hendry Opening Reception at the Bossier Arts Council - From 6 - 8 p.m. the BAC invites the community to welcome local artist Jennifer Hendry and her solo show exhibition "Exaggerating Nature's Beauty" to the lower gallery. Hendry is a painter who primarily works in oil paint, but also dabbles in other mediums. For this show, Hendry took things she found beautiful in nature and exaggerating that beauty into its next level. This special exhibit will be on display until September 27.

  • The Artworks of Joan Cole Opening Reception at the Bossier Arts Council - From 6 - 8 p.m. Shreveport artist Joan Cole will showcase her new exhibit that captures her interests in realism and the abstract. The lure and challenge of venturing into the abstract world has gradually become a passion of Cole's as she explores line, color, forms and textures in compelling and fulfilling. This exhibit will be on display until September 27.

  • "Cumulus" by Joe Bluhm Exhibition Opening at Artspace - From 3:30 - 8:30 p.m. the community can take a peek at some of the recent art, story and design of artist, writer and director Joe Bluhm. Bluhm is a visual storyteller who has made Shreveport his home while making waves in animation and picture books. "Cumulus" focuses on the day-to-day of a visual storyteller and how a creator can manage a career in art and film while raising a family in North Louisiana.

  • "HUEMANEiTY: The Art of Dominique McLemore" Opening Reception at Artspace - From 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. the community can embark on a profound journey through the introspective expressions of artist Dominique McLemore as he presents his exhibition "HUEMANEiTY" at Artspace in downtown Shreveport. This captivating showcase of "impact art" promises to engage the audience through thought-provoking works that delve into societal, political and taboo themes inviting viewers to explore their own humanity. This exhibit will run until October 28.

Saturday, August 12

  • Southern Momma & Friends Comedy Tour at The Strand Theatre - Viral comedian Darren Knight, known for his online character "Southern Momma," is bringing his hilarious standup to downtown Shreveport along with friends Red Squirrel and Gary Cargal for a night full of laughs. Tickets are available at The Strand Theatre of Shreveport's website.

  • Hilary Frazier Art & Illustration at Big Sun Studios - Grab a mimosa and check out the new and established works from Shreveport artist Hillary Frazier. This new exhibit will feature original works and exclusive, one-of-a-kind that will be available for purchase. Frazier specializes in traditional illustration, hand-drawn typography and bouts of work-induced insomnia. Frazier graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport May 2013 with a double Bachelors in Studio Arts and Communications with an emphasis in film before obtaining her Master of Arts in Art at Northwestern University.

  • Big Deal Burlesque at Fatty Arbuckles - This Saturday at 10 p.m. Big Deal Burlesque is back at Fatty Arbuckles at 450 Clyde Fant Pkwy in Shreveport. This New Orleans-based travelling show features an all-star cast and guest features from all over. Come check out these fun, flirty and sensually artful professional burlesque dancers.

  • 90s Summer Bash at Bear's - Shreveport's favorite 90s cover band will be jamming out at Bear's in Shreveport beginning at 9:30 p.m. There will be a $10 cover at the door, and you must be age 21 or up to attend.

  • Comedy Night in East Bank - Don't miss out on a night of comedy featuring Layton Flatt, Levi Light and Evan Coop at the East Bank District & Plaza in Bossier City. Tickets will be $15 at the door and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m.

  • Bingo and Brews at Great Raft Brewing - This special event will support the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana with craft brews and some rounds of bingo. From 4 - 7 p.m. you can play up to six rounds of bingo while sipping on beer to support rescue dogs.
