When it comes to makeup application, are fingers best?
Companies throughout the cosmetics industry keep attempting to kick Beauty Blender to the curb. Through the constant creation of silicone sponges, beauty brands are trying to come up with the next big thing in makeup application. But regardless of the magic held by some of these tools, many experts will continue to say that fingers apply best.
Now, with a new product created by Smashbox, this theory is being put to the test. The Photo Filter: Gel Cushion Applicator is the SiliSponge version of a giant fingertip. Rather than a flat silicon surface, the sponge has fingerprint ridges along one side of it in hopes of mimicking a finger’s application. YouTube’s own NikkieTutorials tried out the sponge in her latest video on Tuesday, where she likened it to a “huge, humongous finger.”
“It seems like there’s another day and another weird foundation applicator on the market,” the beauty guru says while introducing her video. Nikkie herself has tried a number of the tools created since the Beauty Blender took off, including the Makeup Bullet finger sponge, the Evie Blender, and even a silicone bra insert — but there’s even more. (Tati Westbrook has tried some of the rest, more recently feeling hopeful about the Squeegie Blender, which turned out to be not so effective.)
The grip of the fingerprinted sponge provides for better application, Nikkie admits. However, the end result is plagued with lines and creasing instead of the blended look that a real finger or fluffy sponge provides.
“Honestly, I wonder why companies keep trying with these sponges because I don’t think anyone truly, highly enjoys doing their foundation with the silicone sponges of the gel sponges. I feel like brands have to give up,” she concludes after the trial. “It’s almost a little, stop trying to make it happen because it will never happen.”
And with that, people of the internet might just stick to the original Beauty Blender. Or their fingers.
